I just got back from a weekend trip and wanted to share my thoughts on Cal-Neva Lodge. We were really hoping for a rustic, cozy experience, and overall, it delivered. The location is absolutely stunning, right by the river, and the views from the main lodge area are breathtaking. My only minor complaint was that the Wi-Fi signal was quite patchy, which was a shame since I wanted to upload some photos. However, the staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about local hiking trails. If you are looking for a true escape from city life, this lodge is a fantastic option, provided you don't need constant connectivity.

Definitely worth the drive for the views alone. It feels like stepping back in time.

I completely agree about the rustic feel. It was the perfect reset from city noise. We spent most of our time just sitting by the river and reading. The whole atmosphere is magical, even if the Wi-Fi is non-existent.

The patchy Wi-Fi is a major drawback for me. I was hoping to do some virtual tours and share photos immediately. Maybe they could invest in a better satellite connection? Otherwise, it's a solid 4/5.

I had a similar issue with connectivity. I recommend downloading all your maps and photos beforehand. It really helps manage expectations when you know you'll be offline for a few days.

The staff truly made our trip. They organized a fantastic boat tour that we never would have found on our own. They are experts on the local ecosystem and provided incredible tips for wildlife viewing. We spent an entire afternoon hiking a trail they recommended, and it was challenging but incredibly rewarding. If you are a serious hiker, this lodge is a gateway to some of the best wilderness experiences in the region. Just remember to pack layers, as the temperature drops significantly after sunset.

I also found the staff incredibly helpful. They even gave us local foraging guides, which was a fun educational bonus. It really enhanced the sense of being immersed in nature, rather than just visiting a pretty spot.

While the views are breathtaking, the drive itself was brutal. It took us nearly four hours on winding mountain roads, and the gas prices added a significant chunk to the overall cost. For the price point, I expected a little more modern amenity, not just 'rustic.' It's a beautiful place, but maybe not worth the logistical headache unless you are camping.

We went in the fall and the colors were unbelievable. Make sure you check the seasonal closures before planning your trip, as some trails are only open for limited times.

I disagree that the drive is too much. The journey itself is part of the experience. The winding roads and the changing landscape are breathtaking, making the effort feel worthwhile. You should treat the drive like a destination in itself, with stops planned along the way to enjoy the scenery.

It truly feels like an escape. The quiet is restorative. We left feeling completely recharged and ready to face the city again, which is the ultimate goal of a trip like this.

I agree that the staff knowledge is a huge selling point. They made us feel like we were part of a local community, not just paying guests. Their personalized recommendations elevated the whole trip from a nice stay to a genuine adventure.
