I just bought the Paddy Wonder Wheel for my nephew's birthday, and while it looks great, the spinning mechanism seems really flimsy. I've tried following the instructions multiple times, but it keeps getting stuck halfway through a rotation. Has anyone used this wheel before and figured out a trick to get it spinning smoothly? I don't want to return it, but I'm worried I'm doing something wrong. Any tips on maintenance or troubleshooting would be hugely appreciated!

Mine got stuck too. Did you try oiling the axle points? Sometimes a little machine oil does the trick.

You might be over-winding it. The instructions say to wind it until you hear a gentle click, not until it feels tight. I always forget that part, and it makes the whole thing seize up.

Oh man, I had the exact same issue last year. It was definitely the cardboard supports that were warped from humidity. Before you return it, try placing a small, damp cloth around the base for an hour. It helped stabilize the wood and let it spin much smoother.

Short and sweet: check the bolts.

I think the problem isn't the wheel itself, but the mounting bracket. When I bought mine, the bracket was slightly misaligned, causing friction against the table surface. You may need to gently sand the contact points on the base.

Reply to the oiling suggestion: I used machine oil, but it actually made it worse! I think the issue is dust buildup, not friction. Use a soft brush and compressed air to clear the gears. It was a huge difference.

Has anyone noticed if the cardboard pieces are supposed to be cut to size, or if they are pre-cut? Mine felt like I had to trim the slots slightly to get a good rotation.

The only thing that worked for me was to gently push the wheel while winding it. It seems like it needs a little initial momentum to overcome the static friction. Don't force it, just guide it.

Reply to the damp cloth suggestion: That sounds risky. Won't the dampness damage the paint or the printed elements? I'm worried about staining it.

I found that if you spin it clockwise only, it spins much better than counter-clockwise. It's a weird design flaw, but it's the only way to get a full, smooth rotation without it catching.

It's definitely the axle. If you look closely, there's a tiny screw on the bottom of the axle housing. Try tightening that just a hair. It's surprisingly loose and causes all the binding you're describing.
