I've been trying to buy a used laptop and some gaming gear through Marketplace, but I'm really nervous about getting scammed. Has anyone here had bad experiences or know what red flags to look out for? I'm worried about meeting strangers or dealing with people who ask for payment outside of the platform. Any tips on negotiating prices or checking the legitimacy of the seller would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right to stay safe while buying second-hand items.

Always meet in a public place.

Never pay via wire transfer or gift cards. Insist on cash and inspect the item thoroughly before handing over any money. Test the laptop's ports and run it through a quick diagnostic check if possible. If they refuse to let you test it, walk away immediately. It's a huge red flag.

Check the seller's profile history. If they only joined last week and have no other listings or activity, be extremely cautious. Also, ask for proof of ownership or a serial number verification if it's an expensive item.

Use the platform's built-in payment methods if available, and always communicate through the app. It provides a layer of protection and keeps a record of the conversation.

I once bought a console that was totally fake. The seller insisted on meeting at a sketchy location downtown. I refused and used a local police station parking lot instead. Always bring a friend, too.

What about negotiating? Just be polite but firm. If they won't budge on price, it might mean they are desperate to sell it quickly, which can sometimes be a scam tactic.

I think meeting at a coffee shop during the day is best. It's neutral ground and there are witnesses. Also, bring a friend, seriously.

Totally agree about the public meeting spot. And always bring a friend. It makes everyone feel safer.

Never trust a deal that seems too good to be true. If the price is drastically lower than market value, assume it's a scam or that the item is damaged beyond what they are telling you.

For electronics, always ask for the original box and all accessories. Missing items are often signs of a rushed or suspicious sale.

Is it worth using PayPal Goods and Services? Sometimes the fee is high, but the buyer protection is invaluable for expensive items like laptops. It adds a layer of security.

I found that asking specific, technical questions about the item's history helped. Like, 'When was the last time was the battery replaced?' or 'What specific software was running when you bought it?'

I had a bad experience where the seller kept changing the meeting time and location. That lack of consistency was a huge red flag. Stick to your plan and don't let them dictate the terms.

I think the best thing is to buy insurance or a guarantee if the item is high-value. If they refuse to provide any kind of guarantee, walk away.

The payment method is everything. Cash is best for local pickups, but only if you verify the cash amount immediately. Never let them take you anywhere private to 'show' you the item.

Seriously, do a quick Google search on the seller's name or any associated business name. Sometimes they are selling multiple unrelated items, which is fine, but sometimes they are using fake profiles.

I recommend asking for a video walkthrough of the item working right then and there. Not just pictures, but a live video showing it booting up and running basic functions. It gives you peace of mind.
