I recently updated my network firewall and now I cannot access several specific websites that I used to reach without any issues. I suspect that the new security settings might have inadvertently blocked my IP address or specific ports. I've already tried restarting my router and modem, but that didn't solve the problem. Has anyone here dealt with this specific issue after a major firewall firmware update? I'm looking for advice on how to check my current IP status and what steps I need to take to get unblocked without compromising my network security.

Check your firewall's logs first. They should indicate if an IP block occurred or if a specific port was closed. Look for 'denied' entries related to the sites you can't reach.

Did you check if the websites require specific ports, like SSH or certain range of UDP ports? Sometimes the default firewall profile changes and closes necessary outbound ports without warning. You might need to manually whitelist those services.

If you are using a dynamic IP, the easiest fix is often to reboot your modem and wait 15 minutes. This forces your ISP to assign you a completely new IP address, bypassing the block entirely. This is the first thing I would try.

Are you sure the issue is the IP address itself? Sometimes, the firewall update changes DNS resolution settings, making it seem like an IP block when it's actually a name resolution failure. Try accessing the sites using their raw IP addresses directly.

The ISP might be the culprit, not the firewall. Call them and ask if there were any recent network changes or rate limiting implemented in your area. They can check the block status on their end.

I had this exact problem after updating my router's firmware. I had to log into the advanced settings and create an explicit rule allowing outbound traffic on the required ports. It was a manual process, but it worked.

>> User_Alpha: I agree about checking the logs. Also, make sure you are checking the WAN interface rules, not just the LAN rules. Sometimes the update resets the external access permissions.

Try a VPN. If a VPN works, it confirms that the issue is definitely related to your public IP address or the rules governing it. This is a good temporary workaround while you fix the firewall.

If all else fails, consider contacting the firewall vendor's support line. They often have specific troubleshooting guides for major firmware updates and can guide you through the exact steps needed to re-establish connectivity without compromising security.

>> User_Gamma: Yes, the ISP is often the source of confusion. When they say 'network changes,' they might mean they changed the DHCP range or implemented new security protocols that conflict with your old setup. Be persistent with them.
