I'm really getting into collecting music that has a specific atmosphere, and I've been drawn to the 'casino' vibe. I'm looking for records that either feature jazz or lounge music recorded in that style, or maybe soundtracks from old Vegas films. I've seen some listings online, but they seem very expensive and often questionable in terms of condition. Does anyone have experience sourcing these kinds of niche, themed records? I'm open to suggestions on specific record labels or even physical record shops that might specialize in vintage lounge music.

You should check out local record swap meets. Sometimes you find gems that haven't been cataloged online yet.

I had great luck years ago finding a box of 'Sinatra at the Sands' type records at a flea market. Condition was mixed, but the sheer volume made it worth it. I recommend searching for labels like Prestige or Verve for that era.

Vintage hotel gift shops sometimes have old music archives, but it's a long shot. Good luck!

The best bet is definitely specialized online dealers who focus on mid-century jazz. Avoid the big general marketplaces for these niche items; the pricing is always inflated.

Has anyone found good sources for actual film soundtracks? I'm specifically looking for those big MGM Vegas numbers.

I found a fantastic dealer in Chicago who specializes in lounge music. His shop is called 'The Velvet Groove.' You have to call ahead and ask if they have any jazz/lounge inventory.

I agree with the dealer in Chicago. I went there last month and found several pristine copies of old Vegas lounge acts. It was a goldmine. Definitely worth the trip.

Do you think buying box sets from the 70s is better than hunting for original singles? I worry about the sound quality on the later pressings.

I think the original singles are always better, even if they are harder to find. The mastering quality from the 40s and 50s is unmatched. It's worth the expense if you can find a good deal.

Check out university music departments. Sometimes they have deep archives or know of local collectors who are willing to sell their collections.

I've heard rumors about a specialized auction house in New York that handles vintage entertainment memorabilia. Might be too expensive, but worth a look.

I'm worried about the condition. I've bought a few records that were listed as 'VG' but were actually more like 'Poor' due to water damage. Be extremely skeptical of online listings.

For condition, always ask for high-resolution photos of the runout groove and the sleeve corners. That gives you a better idea than just the listing photos.
