I'm getting ready for the live voting and I keep running into these long, tricky country names. I feel like I'm constantly misremembering the exact spelling, especially for smaller nations. Does anyone have a good system or quick tips for remembering how to spell them all correctly? I don't want to waste time looking up the spelling during the broadcast. Any advice on how to prepare for the spelling challenges would be hugely appreciated!

I swear I always mix up 'Moldova' and 'Moldavia'. Maybe creating flashcards with the phonetic spelling would help?

Honestly, I just use a dedicated cheat sheet. I print out a list of all 40+ countries and write them out five times each. It's tedious, but it works wonders for my memory.

My tip is to focus on the unusual letter combinations. For example, remembering the 'y' in 'Guyana' or the double 'l' in 'Tallinn'. Grouping them by tricky letters helps me a lot.

Just watching the live broadcast and pausing when they announce a country name, then immediately spelling it out loud to myself. It's a little annoying, but it reinforces the memory.

I found that if I write the country name and then draw a small, memorable doodle next to it (like a flag or a landmark), it helps my brain associate the spelling with something visual. It's a form of mnemonic device.

Totally agree with the flashcard idea. Maybe we could make a shared Google Sheet or something so we can all contribute our 'tricky' lists and cross-reference them?

Replying to the flashcard suggestion: Yes! A shared document would be perfect. Maybe we could categorize them by region too, like 'Balkans' or 'Eastern Europe'?

The best way is probably just immersion. The more times you hear them announced, the more natural it becomes. Don't stress too much about perfection!

I used to struggle with the Slavic names the most. I started learning the first letter of the country's capital city, which helped me anchor the spelling of the country itself.

I think the sheer volume of countries is the problem, not the spelling itself. Maybe we should just focus on the 10 most commonly misspelled ones and drill those until they are second nature.

I'm not sure about the mnemonic device thing. Isn't it just going to take too much time? I prefer active recall, like writing them out repeatedly.

A quick tip: check the official Eurovision website's participant list before the event. They usually have the definitive spelling, and reviewing that list once or twice will cover most bases.

I've found that grouping them geographically works best for me. For instance, all the Nordic countries tend to follow a similar spelling pattern, which makes them easier to recall together.
