My new house is situated on a small, elevated plot that is surrounded by mature palm trees. I love the tropical feel, but I'm struggling with how to landscape the yard so it doesn't look overgrown or jungle-like. I'm specifically looking for ideas for pathways and seating areas that complement the existing palm canopy. Does anyone have experience with maintaining a yard on top of the palms that still feels open and usable? I want to avoid any major structural changes, just aesthetic advice for plants and hardscaping.

Consider using ground cover that mimics natural forest floor but is low-growing, like creeping thyme. It keeps the space feeling lush without sacrificing the open feel.

Hardscaping is key here. Wide, permeable pavers or flagstone paths will really define the space and prevent it from looking like a solid green mass. Keep the paths curving, not straight.

Short. Use mulch.

I found that planting smaller, complementary tropical foliage *under* the palms, rather than competing with them, was the best strategy. Things like Bird of Paradise or certain varieties of Calathea work wonders because they thrive in filtered light and add color without bulk. For seating, built-in stone benches work better than movable furniture, as they anchor the area and look more permanent and integrated into the landscape.

I think vertical gardening is your best friend. Use trellises or wall planters along the edges to draw the eye upward and utilize space that would otherwise feel cramped between the palms. It adds greenery without taking up floor space.

I agree with the paver idea. But also, don't forget about lighting. Strategic uplighting on the palms and path lighting will make the space feel open and usable even after sunset, which is crucial for elevated plots.

Are you planning on using gravel for the paths? Sometimes gravel can look too messy or uneven when surrounded by such mature, established palms. I prefer stamped concrete or natural stone.

Use large, sculptural potted plants. Think banana leaves or large ginger plants placed in substantial pots. This gives you the tropical feel you want, but the defined boundaries of the pots keep the look controlled and intentional, preventing that 'jungle' effect.

A water feature! Even a small, contained fountain or bubbling basin draws the eye and adds a wonderful sound element that masks any potential noise and makes the area feel more curated and less wild.

Definitely go for permeable pavers. And for the plants, focus on texture contrast. Pair the smooth, massive trunks of the palms with fine-leaved ground covers and pops of color from brightly flowering, non-invasive shrubs. It creates visual interest without overwhelming the space.
