Are Trustpilot reviews really reliable, or is it just paid promotion?

I've been looking at a few companies and Trustpilot seems to be the go-to place for reviews, but I'm starting to feel skeptical. I've noticed some companies with suspiciously perfect scores, and I wonder how much of that is genuine user feedback versus paid placement. Does anyone know if Trustpilot has a system in place to filter out fake or manipulated reviews? I'd really appreciate some insight from people who have done deep research on this topic. I want to make sure I'm basing my purchase decision on actual customer experiences, not just marketing fluff.

It's a huge problem. You have to approach any online review site with extreme skepticism. Assume anything perfect is fake.

I think the main issue is that companies pay for 'review generation' services that just flood the site with positive feedback. It's hardly a genuine reflection of the customer base.

Just look at the pattern. If every review mentions the same specific feature or uses identical phrasing, it's probably manipulated. Look for natural variation in language.

Short. Just check Reddit threads instead. They are usually more raw.

I actually found a good workaround. Instead of trusting the aggregate score, look at the 'Verbatim' reviews and see if there are any complaints about customer service response times. Those are often harder to fake.

Totally agree with the pattern detection idea. I once saw a company with 50 reviews, and 48 of them were all 5 stars, written on the same day. Red flag alert!

How do you verify if a review is actually from a paying customer, or just someone who bought a fake review? Is there a reliable third party that audits this?

I think the platform itself benefits from the perceived authority of the site, so they don't have a strong incentive to police everything perfectly. It's a business model, not a journalistic one.

Replying to the previous post: I don't think a third party could solve this because the incentive for manipulation is too high. It's a constant cat-and-mouse game.

Always check the date range of the reviews. If the site suddenly gets a massive influx of 5-star reviews after a PR campaign, be wary.

I've learned to ignore the overall score entirely. I only read the 1-star and 2-star reviews. They are often the most honest because the user is motivated to warn others.

The only way to be sure is to buy the product and experience it yourself. Reviews are anecdotal evidence at best. Don't let them dictate major purchases.

I think the best approach is to cross-reference. Check Trustpilot, then check Google Maps reviews for their physical location, and then check industry-specific forums. If the stories don't align, assume the worst.
