I was recently reminiscing about the early days of the internet and the simple, fun games you could play on platforms like AOL. I'm looking for recommendations for similar free online experiences today. I'm not looking for massive AAA titles, just those classic, browser-based, pick-your-own-adventure or puzzle games. Do people still use sites or services that host these kinds of nostalgic, simple games? Any links or advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated.

You should check out itch.io. It's a massive hub for indie developers and often hosts free, simple, browser-based games, including text adventures and puzzle games. It's a goldmine for that retro feel.

I remember playing so many simple games. Have you looked into classic web game archives? Sometimes university or museum sites host emulations of old browser games.

Definitely try GeoGuessr. It's not a puzzle game, but the way you have to deduce your location based on visual clues feels very much like those early internet deduction games. It's free to play and highly addictive.

Short. Try dedicated puzzle sites.

I found a great resource for interactive fiction. It's called Twine. It allows you to build your own 'choose your own adventure' style stories, and there are many public, free examples you can play right away. It perfectly captures that early internet narrative feel.

Totally agree with the itch.io suggestion. I found a really fun little roguelike that was completely free and didn't require massive downloads. It was simple but had incredible depth, which is exactly what you're looking for.

I used to play a lot of MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons). While the original sites are mostly defunct, some modern retro gaming forums host emulators or links to modern MUD-like experiences. It's a niche search, but worth looking into.

Are you sure you can't just search for 'browser based text adventure' and filter by free? You might find some dedicated, smaller sites that have kept the flame alive for these types of games. They pop up all the time.

I found a collection of old Flash games compiled by a few dedicated hobbyists. It's a bit scattered, but it's a good starting point for finding that nostalgic, simple puzzle vibe without needing to download anything huge.

The Twine recommendation is spot on. It's the closest thing to a modern, accessible 'pick-your-own-adventure' that doesn't feel like a full-blown video game. I've spent hours just exploring different people's creations.
