I've recently acquired a beautiful 1968 model, and while it runs great, I'm really hoping to push its performance envelope without compromising its vintage character. I've done some basic maintenance, but I'm skeptical about what modifications are actually worth the cost and effort. Specifically, I'm looking into engine tuning, suspension upgrades, and exhaust systems. Has anyone here successfully achieved a noticeable boost in power and handling while keeping the car looking period-correct? Any advice on reputable mechanics or specific parts I should be looking at would be greatly appreciated. I want it to feel powerful, but still classy.

Start with the tires. Proper modern radial tires are the single biggest performance gain you can get without touching the engine.

You're smart to be cautious about cost. Don't over-tune the engine. A mild intake upgrade and a quality exhaust are usually enough for a noticeable, period-appropriate feel.

I'd recommend focusing on suspension bushings first. Replacing worn rubber components with modern poly-urethane ones dramatically improves handling response without making the car look modern. It's subtle but effective. We found a great local shop specializing in vintage suspension work.

What about the transmission? Sometimes the power limitation isn't the engine, but the gearing. A minor swap could make a huge difference.

I think you should look at the carburetors. Cleaning and re-jetting them is often far more impactful than any expensive bolt-on turbo or supercharger kit. Keep it simple, keep it classy.

Reputable mechanics are key. Check out 'Classic Motors Restoration' in the Midwest. They are known for balancing performance with historical accuracy. They are experts at this exact balance.

I agree with the tires. They make all the difference. But also check your brake lines. If the brakes aren't upgraded to handle the extra power, you're just building a fast car that can't stop.

Poly-urethane bushings are great, but be careful. Too stiff, and the ride quality will feel jarring and completely un-classic. You need a balance between modern grip and vintage comfort.

If you are worried about the exhaust, stick to a high-flow, straight-through design that mimics the original sound profile. Avoid anything that sounds like a modern muscle car. A quality muffler upgrade is usually sufficient.

I found a great deal on a mild camshaft upgrade that gave us about 20 horsepower without changing the exterior appearance at all. It was a careful balance of power and preservation. Good luck with the build!
