I've gotten really into doing crosswords lately, but I keep running into these 'side' clues that I just don't understand. It seems like they are designed to be tricky, and I'm not sure if there's a specific pattern I'm missing. Are these clues often misdirections, or is there a general rule for how they work? I've tried looking up common crossword tropes, but nothing seems to explain this particular type of clue. If anyone has experience with these, I would really appreciate any advice on how to approach them or if they require outside knowledge.

They are usually wordplay, not knowledge-based. Think anagrams or hidden words.

I think you're overthinking it. Often, 'side' just means a synonym or an alternative phrasing for the main word. Try looking at the crossing letters for context.

I used to struggle with these too. My biggest tip is to treat them like cryptic clues, even if the puzzle isn't labeled as such. Look for indicators like 'split,' 'apart,' or 'by the side.'

Are you referring to specific types of clues, like those that use directional words? Sometimes 'side' means 'adjacent' or 'next to.'

Totally agree. They feel designed to trick you into thinking you need obscure knowledge, when really it's just lateral thinking.

It's rarely outside knowledge. More often, it's a definition that has multiple meanings, and the clue writer just picked the trickiest one.

If you can identify the general category of the answer (e.g., a color, a type of animal), it narrows down the possibilities significantly. Don't get stuck on the word 'side' itself.

I found that if I write down all the possible synonyms for the clue's definition, I could eliminate the ones that don't fit the letter count or the crossing letters. It's a process of elimination.

I think they are often misdirections, yes. They lead you down a rabbit hole of complex wordplay when a simple synonym would have worked. Keep it simple!

Have you tried focusing on the structure of the clue itself? Sometimes the clue is a phrase, and the answer is hidden within the letters of that phrase, regardless of the word 'side.'

The key is context. If the surrounding clues are all about history, assume the 'side' clue is also historical, even if the wording is vague.

I'd say they require knowing the specific style of the puzzle creator. Some are notorious for vague clues, and knowing that helps manage expectations.

I think the best approach is to take a break. If you're frustrated, your brain gets stuck in a pattern. Come back later and the pattern might become clear.

Reply to the user above: Yes, I agree that context is king. It's like reading a book; you need the preceding chapters to understand the current plot point.

Try cross-referencing the clue with a thesaurus, but only for the core definition, ignoring the tricky 'side' wording. This often bypasses the misdirection.

Don't panic. Crosswords are puzzles, and sometimes the puzzle is just designed to make you feel frustrated until you realize the answer is something incredibly obvious, like 'THE' or 'AND.'

If you are doing themed puzzles, the 'side' clue might be related to the theme itself. Check the puzzle's introduction for any hints about the overall topic.
