I just returned from a trip to Montevideo and stayed at the Sofitel for four nights. Overall, the experience was really positive, especially the location which is fantastic for walking to the main historical areas. The room itself was beautiful and very comfortable, though I found the breakfast buffet a little overpriced for what it offered. Service was generally excellent; the staff were attentive and helpful with local recommendations. I would recommend it for a special occasion, but maybe check out some alternative options if you are on a tighter budget.

I agree about the service. The staff made us feel genuinely welcome, which really elevated the stay. It's clear they prioritize guest experience.

Regarding the breakfast, I found it slightly underwhelming for the price point. While the variety was there, the quality of the pastries and the coffee felt a bit overpriced compared to what other local cafes offered. Maybe skip the buffet and just grab a coffee and pastry elsewhere to save some cash?

My last stay was lovely. The room was spacious and the bed was incredibly comfortable. It felt like a true escape from the city bustle, which was exactly what I needed.

I understand your concern about the breakfast, but honestly, considering the view, the excellent linens, and the prime location, I think the overall value proposition is strong. You have to factor in the convenience and the atmosphere, which are priceless. The breakfast is just one component of a luxury experience, and sometimes you pay a premium for that level of service and polish. I wouldn't let the buffet cost overshadow the overall quality of the stay.

Do they have good recommendations for local tours outside the historical center?

I think you are right to caution budget travelers. If you are strictly looking to save money, staying a few blocks away and using ride-shares might save you a significant amount without sacrificing the Montevideo experience entirely.

I'm planning a trip next year and need help deciding. Was the pool area nice? And what's the best way to get around from the hotel to the Mercado del Puerto?

It sounds like a mixed bag, but in a good way. The positives (location, service) seem to outweigh the negatives (breakfast cost). It seems like a solid choice for a splurge.

The whole vibe of the hotel was wonderful. It felt sophisticated but still connected to the local culture. It wasn't just a place to sleep; it was part of the Montevideo experience itself. I spent hours just walking the surrounding streets and enjoying the architecture. It truly made the trip feel luxurious from start to finish. I would absolutely recommend it for a memorable getaway, regardless of the breakfast cost.

Building on what you said about the overall luxury feel, I think the staff's recommendations for local restaurants were the best part. They didn't just point us in a direction; they gave us specific things to order and why. That level of personalized attention is what makes the price feel justified. It's the curated experience that sells it, not just the thread count on the towels.
