Hi everyone, I'm planning a trip to Cairo next month and have booked a stay at the Sheraton Cairo. I've done some research, but I'm really unsure about the best way to navigate the city from the hotel. Are ride-sharing apps like Uber reliable enough in that area, or should I plan on using taxis? I'm especially concerned about getting to the Pyramids and the Khan el-Khalili market. Any advice on local transport tips or recommended services would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

For reliability, stick to Uber or Careem. They are much safer than hailing random taxis, especially when you are unfamiliar with the area. Always confirm the destination and the fare estimate before starting the trip.

I highly recommend a combination approach. For the Pyramids, an Uber is fine, but for getting deep into Khan el-Khalili, you might find it easier to take a taxi close to the entrance and then walk the rest of the way. The traffic congestion can make the ride-share apps struggle with accurate ETA estimates, so plan for extra time. Also, consider hiring a private guide/driver for a half-day; it gives you flexibility and eliminates the stress of navigating.

I agree about the walkability in Khan el-Khalili. However, make sure you negotiate the price with the taxi driver *before* you get in, even if you are using a ride-share app to get close. Sometimes the last mile requires local knowledge.

Taxis are okay, but only if they are official, metered ones. Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you directly at the airport or major sites. Just use the apps.

If you are going to the Pyramids specifically, consider taking a dedicated tour bus or a private car service for the day. It costs more upfront, but it is stress-free, and you don't have to worry about switching transport methods multiple times.

My recent trip confirmed that Uber is your best friend. We used it extensively, even for short hops. It was reliable, the drivers were professional, and the pricing was transparent. We even managed to get across town during peak traffic hours without major issues. It saved us so much headache.

Avoid rush hour at all costs. Mid-day trips are much smoother, even if it means sacrificing a little time. Traffic is brutal.

A private driver for the day is definitely the way to go. It’s worth the extra money because you gain incredible peace of mind. Plus, they can give you local tips while you are traveling, which is invaluable. Just confirm the rate and the car type beforehand.

Honestly, the Metro is surprisingly good for getting you into the central areas, though it might not drop you right at the Pyramids entrance. It's cheap, fast, and bypasses much of the surface traffic chaos. Use it as your backbone transport and supplement with Uber for the last leg.

Uber is fine for the Pyramids, but don't expect them to drop you right at the entrance gate. You will likely be dropped off on a side street a short walk away. Be prepared to walk a little.

I found that the Metro was great for getting us close to the main historical district. It was efficient and allowed us to avoid the worst of the road chaos. For the final stretch to the market, we used a local shared taxi, which was an authentic experience.

Walking is key. Once you are in the old city area, you will see more than you can ride through. Wear comfortable shoes!

I agree with the Metro suggestion, but be careful about which line you use. If you are staying near the Sheraton, you are already quite central, so you might find that Uber is more convenient for short hops than trying to navigate the Metro stations.

To summarize: Use Uber for distance travel, the Metro for speed, and your feet for the fun parts. Have an amazing trip!
