I've been playing online poker for a few months now, and I'm struggling to figure out where to find consistent, good cash games. I'm not looking for high-stakes tournaments yet, but rather steady, low-to-mid stakes cash action. Specifically, I'm trying to avoid tables with too much 'fish' action, but I also don't want to jump into super deep, complex spots. Does anyone have recommendations on specific sites or types of games (like NL50 vs NL100) that are generally considered to have better player pools and lower rake? Any tips on how to vet a table before committing chips would be greatly appreciated.

Stick to micro-stakes (NL25-NL50) initially. You learn the table dynamics without risking too much capital. It's the best learning curve.

I found that specific sites matter more than the stakes. Some sites attract regulars who play poker for a living, while others are just for casual play. Try checking out sites known for their high volume of serious players.

To vet a table, observe the pre-flop action for a few hands. If everyone is calling with marginal hands and nobody is raising aggressively, you've found a fish table. Look for players who are willing to fold marginal holdings.

Short and sweet: Check the site's player ratings or reputation boards. Sometimes the community knows which tables are trash.

I agree that NL50 is a good starting point, but you also need to look at the rake structure. Some sites charge a little more rake just for the perceived quality of the player pool, so compare the total cost of play.

Does anyone have experience with specific local poker rooms that have online affiliates? Sometimes the local pool transfers over and makes the online action better.

Replying to the rake point: Yes, rake is brutal. Also, look for 'low-limit' specific sections of the site, as they often have better player retention and thus, better play.

The key is consistency. Don't chase the 'perfect' table. Play a few hands at different times of day. The player pool changes drastically from 10 AM to 10 PM. Good luck!

I think the best advice is to play with a small, defined bankroll for testing purposes. Treat it like tuition money. Don't get emotional about losses; they are just data points.

Totally agree with the observation about player pools. I found that if you play during weekdays, especially mid-afternoon, the action is often more balanced because the regulars are working and just playing for fun, not for a big payday.
