My family and I are finally tackling a major renovation project on our home near Windsor, and we are completely overwhelmed by the options out there. We need recommendations for trustworthy general contractors who have experience with older homes and modern updates. Specifically, we are looking for someone who can handle everything from plumbing rough-ins to electrical work, all under one roof. Has anyone had positive experiences with local companies? Any advice on vetting contractors or what questions I should ask them during an initial consultation would be greatly appreciated. We want to make sure we hire someone reliable who won't disappear halfway through the job.

I highly recommend checking local community groups and asking for references from people who have completed similar projects in the last year. Always get at least three detailed bids, and make sure the contract specifies a clear payment schedule tied to completed milestones, not just time elapsed. Also, ask to see permits and proof of insurance for every single trade they bring in. This protects you if something goes wrong.

For older homes, plumbing and electrical are always the trickiest parts because the original infrastructure is often hidden or non-existent. Make sure your general contractor is experienced with crawl spaces and structural assessments, not just cosmetic updates. They need to be able to plan for the unexpected.

Never sign anything before reviewing it with a lawyer who specializes in construction contracts. Pay attention to the warranty details and the dispute resolution process. Some contractors try to use vague language about 'best efforts' which is legally worthless. A good contract should be incredibly specific about scope creep and change orders.

To reply to the Midwest Renovations comment: Be careful with recommendations from people who might be friends with the contractor. I had a similar experience where the initial quote was amazing, but the follow-through was nonexistent. I found that getting a recommendation from a local architect or designer who has worked with them was much more reliable than a neighbor's word.
