Hi everyone, I'm planning a trip to Fez next month and I've heard whispers about the betting scene in the old medina. I'm curious about the legality and the general atmosphere. Are there specific areas or types of bets that are considered safe for tourists? I don't want to get into any trouble with local laws or get scammed. Any tips on reputable spots or what I should watch out for would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, I wouldn't risk it. The atmosphere is fun, but the risks aren't worth the potential trouble.

Be extremely cautious. While some locals gamble, it's generally frowned upon by authorities and can lead to issues for foreigners.

I went a few years ago and stuck to the main tourist squares. I found some very casual, low-stakes card games, but they felt more like entertainment than serious betting. Just keep your wits about you and don't bet anything you can't afford to lose.

Short. No. Just enjoy the souks.

Are you asking about specific types of bets? Because I only saw very informal games, nothing organized or professional. It felt more like a local pastime than a regulated industry.

Reputable spots? None really, to be honest. Everything is very informal. You're dealing with local characters who operate outside of any official framework. It's more about the experience than the payout.

I think the best bet is on getting lost in the maze-like alleys. Forget the gambling, focus on the crafts and the food. It's safer and more rewarding.

Totally agree with the OP. Just stick to the atmosphere. It's a cultural experience, not a casino.

Watch out for people who approach you directly offering 'sure things' or high-stakes games. They are almost certainly trying to scam you out of money. Keep moving and ignore the persistent vendors/gamble operators.

Does anyone know if the main Jemaa el-Fna area is safer than the deeper souks? I'm worried about getting cornered.

The Jemaa el-Fna is much more visible and heavily trafficked, which makes it slightly less risky than the deep, narrow alleys. However, even there, you need to be extremely vigilant about your belongings and your wits. Don't let the fun distract you from the potential legal issues.

I heard whispers too. My advice is to treat any betting activity as a cultural observation, not a financial venture. The stakes are too high for a tourist.

If you must try something, look for very small, local games of chance that involve minimal cash and are purely for fun. Never accept a bet that requires you to leave a valuable item as collateral.

Absolutely do not try to bet on anything involving politics or major local events. Keep it simple and low-stakes if you must participate.

I recommend focusing on the artisan workshops instead. You'll get a much richer and safer experience. Buy some beautiful leather goods!

Be aware of your surroundings at all times. The souks are beautiful but can be overwhelming. Keep your passport and money secure in a deep front pocket, regardless of where you are.

I think the key is knowing when to walk away. If a game feels too intense, or the people running it seem overly aggressive, just politely decline and walk in the opposite direction. Your safety and peace of mind are paramount.

I'd say the risk of getting scammed outweighs any potential fun. Stick to the food stalls and the architecture. It's a much safer bet for your trip!
