I've been reading a lot about comparative religion lately, and it's opened up a huge question for me. It feels like everyone has a clear path, but I'm honestly overwhelmed by the sheer number of belief systems out there. I'm not looking for a conversion, just genuinely trying to understand how people narrow down their focus. Is it based on cultural background, personal experience, or something else entirely? I'd love to hear if anyone has a framework or methodology they used when they felt they needed to make a serious decision about their spiritual path.

For me, it was a slow process of elimination. I started with what was familiar culturally, but then I had to actively seek out perspectives that challenged my upbringing. Reading primary texts helped immensely, but I had to be careful not to just read what I *wanted* to hear.

I think the 'framework' is simply deep self-reflection. You have to map out your own core values and then see which system best accounts for them. If a belief contradicts a fundamental value you hold (like universal compassion or individual autonomy), it's probably not for you.
