I've been playing online poker for a few years now, and I've had a couple of runs where I've gotten really lucky and won big. It's exhilarating, but it's also really hard to know when to scale back. My main question is about bankroll management when the stakes are high and the wins are coming quickly. Should I increase my average buy-in size gradually, or is it safer to stick to a consistent, lower bet regardless of how good I feel? I'm trying to avoid the classic mistake of getting overconfident and blowing it all on one bad hand. Any advice from people who have managed high stakes successfully would be greatly appreciated.

Never increase buy-ins based on emotion. Use a pre-defined, slow ramp schedule.

The biggest mistake is treating a winning streak as proof of skill. It's variance. Stick to your plan, regardless of how good you feel. A slow, controlled increase in stakes is acceptable, but only after confirming your win rate over a large sample size.

Consistency is key. Stick to your average buy-in size. Let the money do the talking, not your ego.

I found that setting a daily loss limit was more important than setting a profit limit. When you win big, the adrenaline makes you careless. Cut the session short before you make a mistake.

How big are we talking? If you're talking micro-stakes, the advice is different than if you're at NL100. Stakes matter when discussing ramp strategy.

If you're worried about overconfidence, take a break. Walk away for a day or two. Reset your mind. The best players are often the ones who know when to step back.

I recommend a 'step-up' approach, but only after a successful, lower-stakes session. Treat the increase like a new challenge, not a continuation of the streak.

Totally agree with the slow ramp. Jumping too fast just exposes you to variance you aren't ready for.

Remember that bankroll management isn't just about the buy-in. It's about managing your time and your emotional state. A winning streak is a gift, but you have to be disciplined enough to appreciate it responsibly.

The key is to treat the winning streak as 'profit' that you are preserving, not 'income' that you can spend freely. Re-evaluate your goals before you sit down.

I would cap your increase at 1.5x your normal buy-in, maximum. After that, you are gambling, not playing poker.

To respond to the previous point: I disagree with capping it. If you are demonstrably playing well, you should allow yourself to capitalize on the momentum until the natural decline happens. Don't fight the flow.

Never play with money you cannot afford to lose. That is the golden rule, no matter how good you feel.

Set a goal for the session, and when you hit it, quit. Period. Don't let the adrenaline keep you at the table.

The safest method is to maintain your standard buy-in and focus entirely on maximizing your Expected Value (EV) per hand, rather than maximizing your profit per session. Focus on the process, not the outcome.

Also, consider the meta. Sometimes, the best way to manage stakes is to move to a different game format or even a different site temporarily to reset your focus and avoid predictable patterns.
