I'm planning a trip to Cairo next month and have booked the Movenpick Hotel in Media City. I've heard the area is great, but I'm worried about transportation. Is it easy to get to major tourist spots like the Pyramids or Khan el-Khalili from the hotel? I'm not sure if relying on Uber or local taxis will be reliable, especially during peak traffic hours. Any advice on local SIM cards or recommended transport services would be hugely appreciated. Also, are there any good local restaurants near the hotel that aren't tourist traps?

I recommend using Uber or Careem for most trips. While traffic is brutal, they are generally reliable and the pricing is transparent, which is a huge relief compared to haggling with local taxis. For the Pyramids, budget at least 3-4 hours round trip, including waiting time. Also, get a local SIM card right away; Vodafone or Etisalat are good bets and make using ride-share apps much smoother.

Uber is your best friend. Just stick to the app.

I agree about Uber, but I found that sometimes the local white taxis, especially if you negotiate the fare beforehand, can be faster when the apps are experiencing high demand. It really depends on the time of day and which specific route you are taking. Don't rely solely on one method.

For the restaurants, try exploring the streets slightly off the main tourist thoroughfares near your hotel. If you wander into areas like Downtown or parts of Zamalek, you will find fantastic local Egyptian cuisine that isn't designed for tourists. Regarding transport, consider taking the Metro for cross-city travel if you are going to a spot near a station, as it bypasses surface traffic entirely. It's cheap and surprisingly efficient.

Don't forget to walk! Many of the best spots, especially around Khan el-Khalili, are best experienced on foot. It's much more enjoyable than trying to navigate everything by car.

A local SIM is non-negotiable. It saves you money and gives you peace of mind when calling or navigating. Just make sure you download offline maps of the areas you plan to visit.

You are right to worry about traffic. During peak hours (7-10 AM and 4-7 PM), nothing moves quickly. I suggest scheduling your major excursions early in the morning, like 8 AM, to beat the worst of the gridlock. This will make the trip to the Pyramids much less stressful.

Be prepared for delays. Cairo traffic is legendary, and even if a ride-share estimates 45 minutes, it could easily take 90 minutes during rush hour. For the Pyramids, I recommend booking a private, dedicated driver for the day. It costs more, but the convenience and the ability to skip the app waiting time are worth the premium. Also, ask your concierge for specific, non-touristy restaurant recommendations.

Just take the Metro to the nearest stop, and then maybe a quick Uber ride the last mile. It's a good combination.

I think the Metro is the most reliable option for getting across the city quickly, especially if you are going from Media City towards Downtown. It completely ignores all the surface traffic issues, making it a great backbone for your travel plan.
