I'm really enjoying the frontier aspect of this game, but I'm struggling with optimizing my border keep defenses. I've read a few guides, but they seem contradictory regarding whether I should focus more on wall thickness or on specialized traps and guard posts. For a player who is just starting out and needs to survive the first few hostile raids, what is the most cost-effective defensive build? Should I prioritize resource generation near the keep, or is it better to invest everything into immediate military strength? Any experienced players who have successfully defended a border keep against a major siege would really appreciate some specific advice on unit placement or resource allocation.

Start with basic wall thickness. Traps are too expensive early on.

I recommend a hybrid approach. Don't choose just one. Allocate 40% to walls, 40% to specialized units like archer towers, and 20% to resource storage upgrades. This gives you flexibility.

Resource generation is key. If you can't afford to repair walls after a raid, the strongest wall in the world won't help. Prioritize local resource nodes first.

Short and sweet: Guard posts are better than traps. They provide immediate combat value.

I disagree that resource generation is the absolute priority. If the keep falls, resources are irrelevant. You must build enough military strength to deter the initial attack. Focus on unit placement in staggered defensive lines.

Did anyone find that upgrading the outer perimeter wall segment by segment is better than doing it all at once? It spreads the cost out nicely.

For the first few raids, focus on unit composition over sheer numbers. A small squad of highly trained skirmishers placed strategically at choke points can outperform a massive, poorly placed army. Think about flanking routes and kill zones.

Totally agree with the unit placement advice. I once lost a raid because I put all my archers in one spot. They were wiped out instantly. Spread them out!

Don't forget the morale boost. Sometimes, simply having a visible, well-maintained keep acts as a deterrent, even before the enemy arrives. It's a psychological defense.

If you are resource poor, invest in defensive structures that utilize local terrain features, like building defenses on a hill or near a river crossing. It's cheaper and more effective.

Regarding traps: they are fantastic if you have the advanced engineering tier unlocked. Otherwise, they are a waste of early gold. Stick to manpower and basic wall repairs.

My experience suggests that a mix of basic walls and 2-3 highly specialized guard posts (e.g., one for ranged combat, one for melee, one for siege defense) provides the best early-game balance. It keeps costs manageable while maximizing defensive capability.

The initial investment should be heavily weighted towards unit training. You can rebuild walls, but you can't instantly regenerate experienced soldiers.

Has anyone tried building a secondary, smaller defensive outpost nearby? It acts as a resource buffer and a staging point if the main keep gets overwhelmed. It's a good early expansion move.

To reply to the unit placement discussion: I found that placing a small, dedicated unit of engineers near the walls to constantly repair minor damage is surprisingly effective. It saves manpower later.

Focus on the bottleneck points. Don't try to defend every square foot. Identify the three most likely entry points and reinforce those heavily. It's efficient and cost-effective.

Overall, prioritize survival over perfection. Build enough to withstand one major raid, and then reassess. Good luck out there!
