My partner and I are planning a trip to Matera next month and we are really excited to finally visit. We've done a lot of research, but the sheer amount of options for tours, restaurants, and things to see is honestly overwhelming. We are hoping to find some truly authentic local gems, not just the big tourist traps. If anyone has visited recently, could you share your top tips? We are particularly interested in unique local experiences or guides that really showcase the real Matera life.

Definitely wander the back alleys. That's where the real magic happens and where you'll find the best little trattorias.

We stayed in a cave hotel (sasso) and it was incredible. It gave such an authentic feel, and the staff were amazing. I recommend booking one of the smaller, family-run places rather than the big chains.

Skip the main Piazza Vittorio Veneto for your first meal. Head slightly off-center towards the residential areas. There's a tiny spot called Trattoria del Pane che makes unbelievable local bread dishes.

A local guide is highly recommended, but don't just pick the first one. Ask your hotel concierge for a recommendation of a guide who specializes in the history of the Sassi and daily life, not just the architecture. They make all the difference.

The Via Madonna delle Virtù is beautiful at sunset. Take a moment to just sit and watch the light hit the stone. It's free and perfect.

I agree about the guides. My guide, Marco, spent an hour showing us the hidden cisterns and underground pathways that most tourists never see. It was fascinating and deeply local.

Did you try the local pasta dish, 'cavatelli con cime di rapa'? It's a staple and so much better than what I ate in the main tourist square. It's a must-try.

Short answer: just get lost. Seriously. Don't follow the signs that say 'Tourist Route.'

I found a small artisan workshop selling local ceramics near the Crocifisso. It was a wonderful little detour and a great souvenir that wasn't mass-produced. It felt genuinely local.

I think the best experience is a cooking class. Finding a local family who teaches you to make the regional bread or pasta is so much more intimate than a big group tour. Check out local cooking schools online.

Reply to user 'CaveStayLover': Oh, I loved the cave stay too! We found a place that also offered a bike rental service, which allowed us to explore the slightly more remote edges of the town without feeling rushed. Very practical tip!

Walk until your feet hurt. Then, stop. Just sit down and people-watch. That's the best tip of all. It costs nothing and gives you the true pulse of the town.

I recommend visiting the Museo della Pietra Materana. It gives great context to the history of the Sassi and how people lived there before the modern era. It's educational and necessary background reading.

Reply to user 'CaveStayLover': Did you find parking near your cave hotel? I struggled immensely, and I think it's better to rely on walking shoes and public transport/taxis for getting around the core area.

For an evening activity, try finding a bar in the quieter parts of the Sassi and just enjoying an Aperitivo. It's a wonderful way to soak up the atmosphere without the pressure of a formal dinner reservation.

Don't forget to check out the local market, especially if you are there on a Saturday. You'll find incredible local produce and meet some vendors who can give you tips on the best local wine pairings. It's a sensory overload in the best way.
