I'm starting to plan a big Mardi Gras celebration and I'm overwhelmed by the sheer number of options out there. I was hoping some of you seasoned party planners could weigh in. Are there any reliable sources for finding good deals on costumes, decorations, or even catering? I'm particularly interested in group discounts for supplies, as we are expecting about 30 people. Also, if anyone has experience with local venues that offer package deals for the season, please share them. I want to make sure we have a fantastic time without breaking the bank.

Check local Facebook groups! They often post last-minute sales for decorations and bulk costume rentals. It's way cheaper than big box stores.

For venues, skip the fancy banquet halls. Look into community centers or local breweries. They usually have much more flexible package deals and are less expensive for a large group of 30. Also, ask if they have any built-in sound system discounts.

I found that combining deals is key. For costumes, instead of buying 30 full outfits, look for themed accessories and let people DIY the rest. For catering, instead of a full meal, consider a massive grazing board setup. You can get amazing bulk discounts on charcuterie and snacks from specialty food stores. I recommend contacting three different caterers and asking specifically for a 'group discount for 30 people' package, mentioning that you are flexible on the menu to save money. Also, always ask about delivery fees and setup costs upfront to avoid hidden charges. It really helps to have a solid budget before you start committing to anything.

Timing is everything. Start looking 6-8 weeks out for the best deals.

You should definitely call 'The Costume Emporium' downtown. They mentioned a group discount program for events over 20 people. I saved about $150 on our last party.

I disagree about the breweries. While they are cheaper, they might not have the private space needed for 30 people to really mingle comfortably. Have you considered renting out a large backyard pavilion or a dedicated community hall? Those often offer better space-to-dollar ratios and allow you to bring in your own catering, which gives you maximum control over the budget and the vibe. I think the atmosphere is more important than the location itself.

Thrift stores are your best friend for decorations and costumes. Seriously.

For catering, I suggest going the potluck-plus route. Assign different groups of 5-6 people to bring a specific type of dish (appetizer, side, dessert). You only need to hire someone for the main drinks and maybe a simple cleanup crew. It cuts the food budget dramatically and keeps the effort fun.

When negotiating group discounts, always bring a 'Plan B' budget figure. Don't just ask for a discount; ask what their best package deal is for a group of 30, and then be ready to walk away if the quote is too high. This negotiation tactic usually gets you a better rate than just asking nicely. I learned this the hard way last year!

Check local community calendars for 'pre-Mardi Gras' sales. They often run deals on supplies weeks before the actual event.

Yes, definitely check the local university's event department. They often have contacts with vendors who offer student/community discounts.

Online marketplaces like Etsy are great for unique, custom decorations, but for bulk items like masks or feathers, stick to local wholesalers. They offer better pricing and you can see the quality before committing to a large order.

I found a great deal on a massive bulk package of colored streamers and beads from a party supply warehouse just outside the city limits. They had a 'buy 10, get 5 free' deal that was perfect for our size.

I found a fantastic local vendor for our decorations. They had a huge bulk discount on everything themed to the colors of Mardi Gras. It was a lifesaver.

Remember to account for the 'extras' in your budget. Things like trash removal, extra seating, and parking permits can add up quickly. Get a detailed quote that includes everything, not just the main supplies.
