Hi everyone, I just arrived in Las Palmas and I have a check I need to cash. I'm a bit confused about the process here; do I need to go to a specific bank, or can I use a local currency exchange service? I'm worried about potential fees or if they require an ID and proof of address. If anyone has recently done this, could you share your experience? Any tips on which bank branch is most reliable would be greatly appreciated.

You absolutely need to go to a major bank. Local currency exchanges usually won't touch a check.

I recommend Santander or CaixaBank. They have the most extensive networks and are generally reliable for this kind of transaction. Make sure you bring your passport and the check itself. It's best to call the specific branch first to confirm their check cashing policies, as they can change.

Short answer: Go to a bank. Bring ID.

I used the Banco Sabadell branch near the main square. They were very helpful. They required my NIE number, which is good to have, and my passport. The process took about 20 minutes, and they warned me about potential conversion fees if I didn't use a local account.

Is it true that the fees are really high? I heard it might be better to just deposit it into an account opened with a local friend.

Yes, the fees can be steep if you aren't a client. If you have a local contact, having them open an account for you is definitely the safest and cheapest bet. Otherwise, expect a service charge plus the exchange rate markup.

I found that the smaller, independent banks were much more difficult. Stick to the big three (Santander, Caixa, Sabadell). They have standardized procedures, which is helpful when you are new to the area.

I tried cashing a check at a small exchange kiosk and they refused it outright, saying it was too complex. Stick to the established banks. And remember, always ask them what the total amount will be *before* they process it.

Don't rely on the ATM network for this. You must speak to a teller in person. It's not a simple cash withdrawal.

To reply to the previous post: Yes, calling ahead is crucial. I called Banco Sabadell and they told me I needed to schedule an appointment specifically for a check deposit, rather than just walking in. It saves a lot of time and frustration.
