I'm looking to buy a new pair of hiking boots and keep seeing Safgard mentioned online, but I'm skeptical about their long-term durability, especially on rough trails. Has anyone used these shoes for anything more than just light walking? I'm particularly concerned about the sole grip and how well they handle wet, muddy conditions. Also, do I need to break them in, or are they comfortable right out of the box? Any detailed feedback on fit or how they hold up after a full day's trek would be hugely appreciated.

I'd say they are okay for day hikes, but don't expect them to last forever on serious backpacking trips. The grip is decent, but muddy slopes are a real challenge.

Short answer: Break them in. Seriously. I wore mine straight out of the box and blistered badly on mile three. Stick to forest paths first.

My experience was mixed. The initial comfort level is high, which is great for light walking. However, after a full day's trek through rocky terrain, the sole started showing wear much faster than I anticipated. I recommend checking out a competitor brand for better long-term durability.

The grip is fantastic when it's dry. But when it gets wet and muddy, they lose a lot of traction quickly. Be careful on inclines!

Totally agree with the sole wear concern. I found that the waterproof membrane was great, but it didn't seem built for constant abuse on rough trails. Maybe stick to them for moderate hiking.

They fit true to size, which was a relief. I bought a half size up and my heel kept rubbing. For general use, they are comfortable, but for anything strenuous, I worry about the ankle support over time.

Are you talking about the Pro-Trek model? Because the basic version is fine for walking the dog, but the Pro-Trek really struggled on the Appalachian Trail section I hiked. Seriously reconsider.

I think the fit is perfect, maybe a little snug initially, but they break in nicely. For durability, they held up surprisingly well even after crossing some creek beds. Definitely worth a try if you're careful.

I found them okay. Just okay. Nothing revolutionary. They are mid-range shoes that perform mid-range. Don't expect miracles.

Reply to the user above: You're right about the sole. I had to buy aftermarket grips for the bottom of my pair after only three months of use. It's a major durability issue for me.

I'd say they are perfect for light walking and forest trails. If you plan on scrambling over rocks or doing technical off-trail hiking, you might want something more robust. They are comfortable right out of the box, which is a huge plus.

They are heavy. That's my main complaint. While they offer great support, carrying that weight over long distances makes my feet tired quickly. Maybe look at a lighter option.

Definitely break them in! I recommend wearing them on short, uneven walks around your neighborhood for a week before attempting anything more than a 5-mile hike. It will prevent blisters.

The wet/muddy conditions were tough. They kept my feet dry, which is a win, but the grip was definitely compromised. I'd rate them 6/10 for all-weather hiking.
