I'm planning a trip to Baden-Baden next month and I'm really excited about visiting the casinos. I've seen some conflicting information online, and I want to make sure I don't show up underdressed or over-dressed. Specifically, are there different rules for the main casino versus the hotel-affiliated ones? Should I plan for smart casual, or is a jacket and collared shirt required for gentlemen? Any advice on footwear or acceptable evening wear would be greatly appreciated before I book my outfits.

I found it to be 'smart casual' at the main casino. No need for a tuxedo, but ditch the shorts.

Definitely plan for a blazer. I went once, and while no one kicked anyone out, I felt underdressed in just a polo shirt. A jacket makes a huge difference in the atmosphere.

For gentlemen, a collared shirt and trousers are the absolute minimum. A sport coat is highly recommended if you want to feel comfortable. Footwear should be polished dress shoes, nothing athletic.

The hotel-affiliated ones are stricter. Think 'business casual' at a nice dinner. Nothing too flashy, but nothing too sloppy either.

Short. Smart shoes and slacks.

I disagree with the 'blazer' requirement. I wore a nice sweater and chinos, and it was perfectly fine. Don't stress too much about it; the staff are generally quite relaxed unless you are trying to look like you're coming from a beach party.

Ladies, cocktail dresses or nice separates work great. Avoid anything too revealing, and remember that elegance is key. It's more about the overall polished look than a specific item.

My advice: check the specific casino's website. Sometimes they list a dress code or a suggested attire. If they don't, err on the side of being slightly overdressed. It's always safer.

Are they really that strict? I wore jeans and a nice shirt and was fine. Maybe the dress code is just a suggestion for the 'fancy' crowd.

Regarding the jeans comment: I would strongly advise against them. While I know some people got away with it, I heard a story about a gentleman being asked to leave because his jeans were too faded. Stick to wool trousers or nice cotton slacks.

For footwear, polished leather shoes are non-negotiable. Sneakers, even nice ones, are a definite no-go zone. It really sets the tone for the whole evening.

I found that the main casino area is quite forgiving, but if you are going to the high-stakes rooms, you absolutely need a jacket. It feels like a requirement there.

A nice evening dress or a sophisticated jumpsuit for women. The key is structure and quality fabric. Avoid anything that looks like it came from a fast-fashion retailer.

I went last year and I wore a blazer and slacks. I felt perfectly comfortable and respected the atmosphere. It was a good balance.

The consensus seems to be: smart, but not black tie. Think 'upscale dinner party' attire. It's about looking put-together and respectful of the venue.

Just bring your best suit jacket and tie. That covers 90% of the bases for both men and women, just pair it with appropriate bottoms and dresses.

Seriously, just check out some pictures of people who have been there. It will give you a much better visual idea than any written advice.

I think the biggest mistake people make is thinking they need a tuxedo. A well-fitting blazer and dress pants are sufficient and much more comfortable for a long night of gaming.
