I'm working on a really tricky crossword puzzle right now, and I'm completely stuck on one clue. It just says 'Multitude' and the answer needs to be a seven-letter word. I've already tried 'crowd' and 'host' but they don't fit the letter count or the pattern. Has anyone solved this specific clue before? I suspect it might be looking for a synonym that is a bit more obscure or academic. Any suggestions or alternative answers would be greatly appreciated so I can move on to the rest of the puzzle.

Have you considered 'POPULUS'? It's Latin for people or a populace, and it fits the 7-letter count perfectly. Crossword setters love using Latin roots for these kinds of clues.

It might be 'HOSTEL' if they are thinking of a place where a multitude gathers, but that feels like a stretch. Good luck!

Crossword clues like this are brutal because they rely heavily on obscure vocabulary. If 'POPULUS' doesn't work, try looking at the letters that cross the clue. Sometimes the pattern dictates a very specific, non-intuitive answer. For example, if the third letter is 'A' and the last is 'E', that narrows it down significantly. Don't just rely on synonyms; rely on the grid structure.

If it needs to be academic, maybe 'SEMINAR' or 'COLLECT'? SEMINAR is 7 letters and relates to a gathering, though it's usually a place, not the multitude itself.

Check 'SWARMS'. It's 6 letters, but sometimes setters miscount or the clue is slightly different. Just a thought.

I think 'POPULUS' is the most likely candidate, but I'm worried about the gender agreement if the puzzle is very high-level. If 'POPULUS' is wrong, could it be 'MASSIVE' if they are treating it as an adjective describing the multitude?

Sometimes these clues are deliberately misleading. They might be looking for a word that means 'many' rather than the group itself. Words like 'ABUNDANT' (8 letters) or 'AMPLE' (5 letters) are too long or too short. I remember one puzzle where 'multitude' actually pointed to 'GRADE' because of a specific cross-reference. It's wild, but it happens.

You're right, the letter pattern is key. Thanks for the reminder!

What about 'POPULACE'? Wait, that's 8 letters. Hmm. If we are looking for a noun, perhaps 'POPULUS' is the only solid bet. If that fails, try 'CLUSTER'. It's 7 letters and fits the theme of grouping.

I agree that the pattern is everything. If 'POPULUS' doesn't fit the letters, then 'CLUSTER' is a much safer, more common synonym that still fits the length and theme. Fingers crossed!
