I've been doing a lot of cryptic crosswords lately, and I keep getting stuck on the 'runs through' type of clue. I understand the basic mechanism, where one word or phrase is inserted into another, but sometimes the placement or the definition is really tricky. Is there a common mistake people make when solving these? I've tried looking up specific examples, but I'm wondering if there's a general strategy or a specific grammar rule I should be paying attention to. Any advice from seasoned puzzle solvers would be greatly appreciated!

I struggled with this for ages until I realized I was overthinking the grammar. Sometimes the 'runs through' phrase is just a simple description, not a literal insertion. For example, 'a river runs through a town' might just mean the river is mentioned in the definition, not physically placed in the word.
