Hi everyone, I'm new to the area and I'm looking for some local advice. Specifically, I'm trying to find out what resources are available for the trans community here in Ravenna. Are there any specific centers, groups, or even just recommended doctors or therapists who are knowledgeable and affirming? I'd also appreciate knowing if there are any regular meetups or community events I could check out. Any pointers on navigating the local healthcare system as a trans person would be incredibly helpful. Thank you so much in advance for your advice!

Welcome to Ravenna! Finding local support can be tricky, but I found a few things that helped me when I moved here. I recommend checking out the Ravenna LGBTQ+ Center website first; they usually list local affirming providers and sometimes host community workshops. It's a great starting point for resources.

Short answer: The local university health services are often the best place to start for referrals. They usually have protocols for gender-affirming care, but definitely ask for a referral to a specialist outside the main campus clinic.

I had a really negative experience with the general practitioners initially. I spent months just getting referred to the right people. My best advice is to look for providers who specifically list 'gender-affirming care' or 'trans-competent' on their profiles. It saves so much time and frustration.

Are there any specific groups? I'm looking for something casual, maybe a coffee meetup, not a formal support group.

The Ravenna LGBTQ+ Center is definitely the main hub. They host a monthly 'Trans Coffee Hour' on the third Tuesday. It's very casual and a great way to meet people without the pressure of a formal meeting. Check their calendar for details!

I found a small, private practice group that focuses on mental health for trans people. It's run by a therapist named Dr. Elena Rossi. She is highly recommended for her approach to dysphoria and social transition. You might need a referral from a primary care doctor, so start there.

Totally agree about the center. I also found a fantastic local resource for clothing and community building that isn't a formal group, but it's super helpful for feeling connected.

For the healthcare system, I found that the county health department has a specific intake process for gender-affirming care referrals. It's bureaucratic, but they are the official starting point for many things like hormone therapy prescriptions. Don't skip them.

The local library sometimes posts flyers for meetups. It's nothing big, but it's a low-stakes way to find out what's happening in the community.

I've been to a few different therapy groups. The one at the community college was really supportive, but it was very focused on coming out to family. If you are looking for general support, the center is better.

Has anyone found good endocrinologists specifically for trans people? I'm worried about finding someone who understands the nuances of hormone replacement therapy.

The Ravenna LGBTQ+ Center is your best bet for a list of affirming doctors and therapists. They keep their resource list updated, which is invaluable when you are new to an area. I highly recommend calling them and explaining your specific needs.

I found a great local trans-friendly shop downtown. It's a safe space and they often have bulletin boards with flyers for local meetups and small events. It's a good resource for everything from clothes to community info.
