My family is finally planning a trip to Red Rock Resort next fall, and I'm feeling overwhelmed by the amount of information online. I'm trying to figure out if the shoulder season is actually good for activities, or if we'll be rained out. Also, for a family with two young kids, what are the must-do activities that aren't too expensive? Any advice on ideal packing lists, especially regarding hiking gear or specific clothing for the local climate, would be hugely appreciated. Has anyone stayed there in October? Thanks in advance for your tips!

October is actually perfect! The crowds thin out, and the fall foliage around Red Rock is stunning. You'll get great hiking weather.

For young kids, skip the expensive zip-lining and focus on the free nature trails. Pack a frisbee and some sketchbooks; it's great for downtime.

I stayed last October. We were rained out for half a day, but the other half was amazing. Always pack layers, even if the forecast looks clear. A waterproof jacket is non-negotiable.

Seriously, check the local weather forecast daily. Don't plan everything around perfect sunshine. Embrace the unpredictable!

Short answer: Yes, the shoulder season is good, but be prepared for variable weather. Pack boots with good ankle support, regardless of the activity.

Totally agree about the layers. When you said 'hiking gear,' I'd add gloves and a beanie. Even if it's 60 degrees, the elevation drop makes it feel much colder.

Budget tip: Instead of paying for a guided tour, rent bikes and cycle the main loop trail. It's much cheaper and still feels like an adventure.

We found a great picnic spot near the river bend. Bring a portable speaker and some snacks. It made the whole day feel very low-key and affordable.

Definitely bring a first aid kit. And maybe some bug spray, even in the fall. Those mosquitoes can be sneaky!

To the person who asked about October: I found that the mornings are often crisp and cool, but the afternoons warm up quickly. So, I recommend a fleece jacket and a light hoodie.

If you have young kids, look into the local park district passes. Sometimes they offer discounts on resort activities, which saves a ton of money.

Do you think the kids would enjoy the nature scavenger hunt idea? We did one last year, and they were completely absorbed for hours!

Regarding the rain, I recommend checking out the indoor artisan market that is usually open near the main lodge. It's a good rainy-day backup plan and supports local artists.

I think the key is having a flexible itinerary. Don't plan every minute. If the weather turns, you can pivot to a low-key activity like reading or playing cards.

For clothing, think 'quick-dry' everything. Hiking sweatpants and synthetic shirts are your best friends. Cotton is an enemy in this climate.

I highly recommend checking out the local farmer's market the day before you leave. It's a fun, cheap activity and you get great local snacks to start your trip off right.

My advice is to book accommodations that have a kitchen. Cooking some of your own meals will save you a fortune on dining out every night. Have fun planning!
