My friends and I are planning a night out this weekend and we're struggling to decide where to go. We've heard great things about the local pubs, but we're really looking for something with a lively atmosphere, not just a quiet place to drink. Ideally, we want somewhere that has some sort of activity, maybe a good board game selection, live music, or even a pub quiz happening. Any recommendations for a 'fun pub' that isn't overly touristy would be amazing. We're open to different areas, just need that perfect balance of fun and good beer.

We found a fantastic spot called The Griffin's Head. It's tucked away in the Old Quarter, which keeps the tourist crowds out. They have a dedicated board game corner and often host acoustic sets on Thursday nights. It has that perfect cozy, lively feel without feeling like a performance venue. We spent an entire evening there last month and it was exactly what we were looking for. The beer selection is excellent too, so you get the fun atmosphere and the good beer combo you wanted.

Oh, you should check out 'The Fox & Hound' instead. It's slightly further out but has a massive selection of games and they run a huge pub quiz every single week. It's definitely more focused on the activity side, which sounds like what you and your friends need. It's a bit bigger than the places right in the main square, so it feels more local and less geared towards day-trippers. Give that one a try!

I think the Copper Kettle is great, but it can get really packed. If you want a slightly more relaxed vibe but still fun, try The Griffin's Head on a weeknight. You might get a table and actually be able to talk over the music, which is sometimes nice after a long week of planning.

How about we stick to the area near the university? I heard a place called 'The Scholars' Nook' that is always packed with local students and has a great, unpretentious atmosphere. It's perfect for a group that wants to feel like they've found a secret local gem. They sometimes have open mic nights too, so you might get the live music element you are looking for without the overwhelming tourist feel.

I agree with the user about the Old Quarter. It really maintains that local feel. If you want guaranteed fun, look for places advertising 'game nights' specifically, rather than just general pub ambiance. That usually means they have the dedicated space and the activities ready to go.

I'd recommend checking out 'The Corner Tap'. It's a bit grungy, which I think is a good thing because it keeps the tourist vibe away. They have a rotating schedule of local bands, and the staff are super helpful if you need recommendations for local activities. It's a bit of a walk, but totally worth it for the atmosphere.

Seriously, the pub quiz at The Copper Kettle is unbeatable. It's a great way to guarantee a fun night for a group without having to plan too much yourselves. Just make sure to book a table in advance, especially if you are going on a Friday or Saturday night, because it gets absolutely slammed.
