My son is about 4 months old, and I'm starting to get worried about his motor skills. He seems to be spinning himself around a lot when I put him on a playmat, and sometimes he rolls over and then seems to do little spinning motions with his torso. I've read some things online, but I'm not sure if this is typical development or if I should be concerned about muscle tone. Has anyone else noticed this kind of spinning movement? What kind of physical therapy or milestones should I be looking out for next?

My pediatrician suggested a developmental screening at his next checkup. If you are really worried about muscle tone, asking for a referral to a pediatric physical therapist is the best step. They can observe him and tell you if the movement pattern is typical or if it needs more specific attention.

I read that excessive spinning could sometimes be related to vestibular input or sometimes even a mild overstimulation. Maybe try keeping play sessions shorter and more structured? Also, ensure he gets enough sleep, as fatigue can sometimes manifest as unusual motor activity.
