My partner and I are finally ready to tackle the master bathroom, but we are completely overwhelmed by the scope of the project. We are looking at replacing everything, from the vanity and toilet to the tiling and fixtures. We've done some preliminary research, but the costs seem to vary wildly depending on whether we hire professionals or do most of the labor ourselves. Specifically, we are trying to gauge how much time we should realistically set aside for the entire process, including drying times and waiting for deliveries. Also, does the cost of high-end fixtures really justify the extra expense, or is there a good middle ground we should aim for? Any advice on realistic budgeting would be hugely appreciated.

Time-wise, budget at least 6-8 weeks minimum. Plumbing and tiling drying times are the biggest culprits.

For cost, I'd say a realistic mid-range budget is $15,000 to $30,000, assuming you hire professionals for the heavy lifting. This covers decent materials without going ultra-luxury.

Don't skimp on the waterproofing layer. That is the most critical part of the job, and corners cut there lead to massive headaches later. Hiring a licensed plumber is non-negotiable.

High-end fixtures are mostly aesthetic. The difference in function between a $500 faucet and a $1500 faucet is negligible for daily use. Focus your budget on the labor and the underlying structure.

If you DIY, you save money, but you lose time. Factor in the time spent researching, sourcing, and fixing mistakes. It's a huge commitment.

I found a great middle ground by opting for semi-custom vanities and using subway tile instead of large format porcelain. It looked expensive but kept the budget manageable. It was a huge relief.

I spent $22,000 total. The biggest unexpected cost was the demolition waste removal and the necessary electrical upgrades. Always get multiple quotes that include these hidden fees.

Reply to the user who asked about time: We were told it would take 4 weeks, but it actually took 7 weeks because the tile grout needed extra curing time. Build in at least a week of buffer time for everything.

Definitely hire professionals for the plumbing. It's worth the extra cash for peace of mind and code compliance. A bad plumbing job costs thousands to fix later.

I think the cost justification for high-end fixtures depends on your style. If you are going for a vintage or industrial look, the details really matter. If it's modern and minimalist, function over flash is fine.

Don't forget to budget for lighting! Good lighting makes the whole room feel more expensive and finished, regardless of how much you spend on the vanity.

My advice: Get a detailed scope of work from three different contractors. Compare their timelines and what is included in the cost. Don't just compare the lowest bid; compare the most comprehensive one.
