I just updated my macOS to the latest version, and now I am completely locked out. It keeps asking for a password, but I am positive I haven't changed it, and I cannot remember the original administrator password. I tried using my Apple ID credentials, but it says the account is not recognized. Has anyone successfully recovered access to their MacBook Pro after a major OS update like this? I'm worried about losing access to all my files and need advice on the proper recovery steps.

Did you try Recovery Mode? That's usually the first step.

This is a common nightmare. First, check if you have an Apple ID linked to the device that you can use to reset the password through iCloud.com. Sometimes the local password and the Apple ID password are different, and the OS update can confuse the system. If that fails, you might need to erase the drive and restore from a Time Machine backup. Be prepared to lose local files if you don't have a recent backup.

Check the 'Forgot Password' option on the login screen. Sometimes it prompts you to use your Apple ID, even if you think it's not recognized.

Seriously? You should have backed up everything before the major update. It's a risk.

I had this exact issue last year. The key was booting into Safe Mode. It cleared some temporary login issues. Try holding Shift while powering on the MacBook. Let me know if that works for you.

Are you sure you haven't changed the password recently, even if you don't remember it? Sometimes we change it and immediately forget the new one.

I agree with the Safe Mode suggestion. It's low risk and often solves these minor credential hiccups.

If you cannot access Recovery Mode, you might need to take it to an Apple Store Genius Bar. They have specialized tools to bypass these locks without erasing your data, provided you can prove ownership.

Wait, if you used your Apple ID credentials and it said 'not recognized,' that means the system isn't seeing the correct account linkage. You might need to check your Apple ID status online first to ensure it's active and linked to the device.

Try resetting the local administrator password using the Terminal command in Recovery Mode. You'll need to enable the Terminal first.

Don't panic. Most of the data is fine. Just remember that the OS update itself sometimes causes profile corruption, which is why a full restore is often the safest bet, even if it's scary.

My friend had this problem and ended up having to reinstall macOS via Internet Recovery. It took hours, but he got back in. It's a process, but it's doable.

If you have a recent Time Machine backup, even if you lose some local settings, the data recovery is worth the effort. That's the goal.

I'd recommend starting with Safe Mode first. It's the least destructive troubleshooting step.

Has anyone tried resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) and NVRAM/PRAM? Sometimes these hardware resets clear out the login state corruption that the update might have caused.
