I'm working on a really tricky crossword puzzle and I'm completely stuck on one clue. It says 'generous one' and I think the answer is a single word that fits a specific number of letters. I've tried several synonyms, but none of them seem right for the grid I'm looking at. Has anyone else encountered this clue before, or does anyone know what the intended answer might be? I'm worried I'm overthinking it and missing a simple wordplay element. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked if the answer could be 'ALTRUIST'? It's a very common crossword answer for that clue.

If it's a single word, and you're worried about wordplay, maybe they are looking for a literary reference? Sometimes 'generous one' points to a specific character name or title.

How many letters is it? That's the most crucial piece of information. Knowing the length will cut down the possibilities drastically. For example, if it's 7 letters, 'BENEVER' or 'GIVERLY' might fit, though they are less common.

I think you might be overthinking the definition and underthinking the wordplay. Could it be a homophone? Like a word that sounds like a generous person but means something else entirely.

Reply to the OP: Did you try 'DONOR'? It's short and fits the definition perfectly. If the grid is small, this is a strong candidate. Let me know if that works!

Sometimes these clues are deceptively simple. If the answer is 'GIVER', it's short, but it's also very literal. Crosswords love the obvious answer when you are stressing too much.

I remember a puzzle where 'generous one' was actually 'NICKLE'. I know, it makes no sense, but the clue was a terrible pun based on a character name. Be prepared for the absurd!

Reply to User 3: The length is 8 letters. Knowing that changes everything! 'ALTRUIST' is 8 letters, so that is definitely worth testing first. If that fails, think of words ending in -IST.

If it's a historical figure, maybe 'PHILANTHROPE'? That's a long one, but it fits the meaning and is a classic crossword answer for generosity.

Check the surrounding letters. Sometimes the letters already filled in the grid can eliminate entire categories of words. If the third letter is 'A' and the last letter is 'E', that narrows it down considerably.

Reply to User 1: 'ALTRUIST' is good, but if the puzzle is British, they might prefer 'BENEVOLENT' (10 letters). Crossword compilers often use different vocabulary depending on the region.

Don't forget to consider archaic words. Sometimes the setter is pulling from older English vocabulary. Maybe something like 'BENEFACTOR'? It's a bit formal, but fits the theme.

If all else fails, search for the puzzle's source or date online. Other people who solved it might have posted the intended answer. Good luck!

Reply to User 6: You are right, sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. But if 'GIVER' is too simple, maybe it's a plural form that they are treating as singular, like 'GIVERS'?
