Hi everyone, I'm planning my first trip to Lisbon next month and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options. I have three full days and I want to hit the main highlights without rushing too much. Should I focus primarily on Alfama and Baixa, or should I dedicate a whole day to Belém and Sintra? I'm also trying to figure out the best local transport-is the tram system enough, or should I rent a car for day trips? Any advice on must-see spots or local restaurants that aren't tourist traps would be hugely appreciated!

Focus on Alfama and Baixa for the first two days. It's walkable and gives you the core Lisbon vibe. Save the day trip for the last day.

Regarding transport, do not rent a car. Lisbon is hilly and the trams are perfect. Use the tram for getting around the central areas and maybe a train for Sintra.

For food, skip the main squares for dinner. Head into the side streets in Alfama and look for a 'tasca'. You'll find authentic, non-touristy food there.

Sintra is magical, but it eats up a whole day. If you only have 3 days, I'd prioritize Belém's Jerónimos Monastery and the Pastéis de Belém over trying to squeeze Sintra in.

Totally agree about the trams. They are the best way to experience the city's unique character. Just wear comfortable shoes, trust me.

Must-see spot: Tram 28 ride, but be careful of pickpockets. They are everywhere. Keep your valuables secure, especially when the tram is crowded.

I recommend dedicating the first day to Baixa/Chiado, the second to Alfama/Graça, and the third to Belém. This gives a good geographical spread.

If you are going to Sintra, consider booking a private transfer instead of the public train. It's less stressful with luggage and gives you more flexibility.

Short answer: Trams and walking. Leave the car at home. It's a nightmare to park and navigate.

Reply to the transport question: The tram system is fantastic for the core city, but for Belém, a quick Uber or a dedicated train line is much more efficient than trying to walk the whole distance.

For a non-touristy restaurant, try Cervejaria Ramiro in Intendente. It's famous for seafood, but it's genuinely local and worth the wait.

I spent a day in Sintra and it was breathtaking. Don't skip it! Just allocate 8-10 hours for the day trip, including travel time.

Day 1: Baixa and Praça do Comércio. Day 2: Alfama and exploring the viewpoints (miradouros). Day 3: Belém. Perfect balance.

The Miradouros are free and offer the best views. Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro das Portas do Sol are absolute must-sees. Go early morning!

Don't worry about being overwhelmed. Lisbon is very manageable. Just buy a Viva Viagem card and let yourself get lost in the back alleys. That's where the magic happens.

If you are a history buff, dedicate extra time to the Carmo Convent ruins. It's hauntingly beautiful and often overlooked by the main tourist flow.

I found that combining Belém and Sintra in one day is exhausting. Split them up. Belém one day, Sintra another. It makes a huge difference to the pace.

For lunch, grab a 'bifana' sandwich from a street vendor. It's cheap, delicious, and quintessential Lisbon street food. Try it near the Rossio square.

A car is only useful if you plan to explore the Cascais coast line. Otherwise, stick to public transport. Seriously, don't risk driving in the center.
