Does anyone know the proper grind for the Brew 13 blend?

I finally got my hands on the Brew 13 blend, and I'm really excited to try it, but the instructions were vague about the grind. I've tried using a medium setting and a slightly finer setting, but the resulting cups are wildly inconsistent. Sometimes it's too acidic and sour, and other times it tastes muddy. Is this blend particularly sensitive to grind size, or am I missing a key step in the brewing process? I'm hoping to achieve that perfect balance of nutty and chocolate notes they advertised. Any advice from experienced brewers would be greatly appreciated!

I found that a medium-fine setting works best for Brew 13. It really brings out those chocolate notes without being sour.

It is very sensitive. You are probably using a burr grinder if you are having such drastic swings. Consistency starts there.

Try grinding it slightly coarser than you think you should. When it tastes muddy, it's usually under-extracted, but sometimes the grind is just too fine.

Are you using a pour-over or an espresso machine? The optimal grind changes drastically depending on the brewing method.

I think you might need to adjust your water temperature as well. Sometimes the grind issue is compounded by suboptimal water chemistry.

Medium-fine is usually the sweet spot for this blend. Don't overthink it. Just trust the process.

Hey, @CoffeeGuru22, I agree with the poster. I found that going a little coarser than medium-fine was the key. It stopped being sour and started hitting that nutty profile.

Check your beans. Are they freshly roasted? If the beans are old, no amount of grind adjustment will fix the flavor profile.

I used a dedicated conical burr grinder and found that setting 10 on my grinder was perfect. It was just slightly finer than standard drip setting.

Why do you think so? I have a different experience. I used a blade grinder once and it was terrible, but I found that a very uniform, slightly coarser setting really balanced the acidity for me.

If you are using a French press, you need a much coarser grind than for a pour-over. That's the most common mistake people make when they are new to specialty coffee.

I recommend doing a taste test comparison. Brew one cup with medium, one with slightly finer, and one with slightly coarser. This will help you pinpoint the exact sweet spot.

It's definitely sensitive. The advertised notes are achieved when the extraction time is perfect, which is directly related to the grind size. Start by adjusting the grind by quarter notches at a time.

I think you should also try adjusting your water temperature. Lowering it by 2-3 degrees can sometimes mellow out the sourness without changing the grind.

Seriously, if you are getting wildly inconsistent results, your grinder is the culprit. It needs to be capable of producing a highly uniform particle size. Invest in a quality burr grinder.

I found that if I grind it just a hair coarser than medium, the chocolate notes really popped while the sourness disappeared. Good luck!

Don't forget the water quality! Using filtered water, ideally with a specific mineral content, can make a huge difference in how the grind translates to the cup.
