Does anyone actually use CD slot phone holders anymore? Worth the hassle?

I'm looking at upgrading my car mount, and I keep seeing these CD slot phone holders advertised. My car is older and the CD slot is the only convenient spot for a mount, but I'm skeptical. I've read mixed reviews online; some say they are super stable, while others complain they block the slot or fall out easily. Has anyone used one of these in the last year or two? I'm worried about the longevity and if they really improve navigation visibility without being a safety hazard. Any real-world feedback would be greatly appreciated before I buy one.

I used one for about 18 months. It was fine, but I really struggled with the stability when cornering at speed. It felt like it was constantly vibrating.

Honestly, I think you are better off with a vent mount if your car allows it. The CD slot mounts always feel a bit flimsy, and sometimes they don't fully support the weight of a modern phone.

Mine was great until the rubber grip started degrading after a year. Then it just slipped and did nothing. I'd recommend looking for models that use a metal clasp instead of just suction cups.

Short answer: No. They are a hassle. You spend time installing it, and then you spend time adjusting it because it keeps falling out or blocking the slot entirely. Too much fuss for minimal gain.

Totally agree with the vent mount suggestion. My car is a 2008 model, and the vent mount I bought was rock solid and kept the phone at eye level without blocking airflow. Much safer than messing with the CD slot.

If you must use the CD slot, make sure the holder has an adjustable arm that allows you to position the phone at the optimal height. Just having it there isn't enough; visibility is key for safety.

I found that the key was the material. Some are cheap plastic and feel brittle. I invested in a name-brand one with a metal base, and it has held up surprisingly well through heavy use, even through some rough roads.

The one I bought last year was super stable, maybe the most stable mount I've ever used. I only had to worry about the initial installation being a bit tight, but once it was set, it stayed put. I recommend checking reviews that mention specific car models, not just general usage.

Has anyone tried the ones that actually clamp onto the edges of the slot, rather than just sitting inside it? Those seemed more secure and less prone to falling out when I hit bumps.

Also, remember to clean the slot surface thoroughly before mounting anything, or it won't grip properly.
