I actually think the bonus structure is designed to keep you playing longer, regardless of whether you win big or lose small. It's a retention tool, not a profit generator.

I think the pattern is related to the time of day. I played in the late evening, and the payouts seemed much higher than when I played earlier in the afternoon.
