I'm planning a trip to Paris and I'm really excited for a night exploring the local spots, but I'm completely unsure about the best way to handle money. Since I'm coming from Germany, I'm used to using cash a lot, and I've heard that some smaller bars or bistros in the Marais area prefer 'echtgeld'. Do I need to carry a lot of Euros, or is it better to rely on cards everywhere? Also, are there any common scams I should watch out for when paying with cash late at night? Any advice on maximizing my budget without getting ripped off would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, for a night out, a mix is best. Use cards for big places like fancy restaurants or department stores, but keep about 50-75 euros in small bills for tips, street vendors, and those tiny bistros in the Marais. It's safer and more convenient than carrying too much cash.

Card acceptance is actually much better than you think now. Most bars and restaurants, even small ones, take cards. Just make sure you check for the logo. Don't let someone pressure you into paying cash just because they prefer it.

I spent a night in Saint-Germain last year. Everything was card-friendly. The biggest thing is to watch out for the 'help' scams near major tourist spots. If someone approaches you offering directions or help, be polite but firm and keep walking. It's a classic distraction tactic.

Definitely carry some cash, but don't rely on it. I found that buying a bottle of wine and a snack with cash at a local spot was cheaper than using a card, but I still used my card for the metro and the main dinner bill. Balance is key.

Totally agree with this. I found that even small bakeries and coffee shops often prefer cash, and sometimes the card machines are down or they just don't want the transaction fee. Always have small change ready.

Be careful about ATM fees too. Using your German bank's card at a local ATM might incur two sets of fees (your bank and the local bank). It's better to use a dedicated travel card or withdrawal from a major bank branch if possible.

A friend mentioned that the scams are often related to payment itself. Sometimes they'll 'accidentally' bump into you while you're paying, and then you'll find something missing. Keep your wallet secure and be aware of your surroundings when the bill comes.

Short answer: Cards for convenience, cash for character. Don't stress too much about it, just keep a small float of euros handy.

I think the biggest budget saver is avoiding the tourist traps. Instead of going to the main square, walk a few blocks deeper into the neighborhood. The quality is often better, and the prices are significantly lower, regardless of payment method.

Replying to the ATM advice: Yes, research your bank's international withdrawal fees beforehand. Some banks have partnerships that waive these fees, which can save you a fortune over the course of a week.

I would suggest getting a local SIM card or an e-SIM for navigation. Getting lost is the easiest way to blow your budget, and knowing exactly where you are prevents those expensive taxi rides late at night.

To summarize: Have a mix. Keep small bills for tips and micro-purchases. Use cards for everything else. And always, always be aware of your belongings, especially when you're having fun and distracted by the atmosphere.
