I'm planning a trip to Las Vegas next month and staying at the MGM Grand. I've heard it's a massive resort, and I want to make sure I don't waste time. I'm interested in a mix of high-end dining, some decent entertainment, and maybe checking out the pool scene without spending a fortune. Does anyone have tips on which specific restaurants are worth the splurge, and what the best times are to catch the action without feeling overwhelmed? Also, are there any hidden gems or less touristy spots nearby that I should carve out time for?

For the pool, skip the main action at the MGM pool itself. Instead, check out the smaller, less crowded pools at nearby resorts like the Cosmopolitan or Caesar's. You can usually get in and out without paying for a full day pass, which saves a ton of cash.

If you are splurging on dinner, I highly recommend Carioqua. It's phenomenal, but also, if you want something slightly less intense but still high-end, try Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen. Make reservations weeks in advance, especially for a Saturday night. Also, remember to book a show that has dinner included, like Cirque du Soleil's 'Mystère' if they are running it.

Timing is everything. For entertainment, go early. Don't wait until 11 PM to decide where to go. Check out the resident acts in the lobby bar area around 7 PM. It's usually buzzing but manageable, giving you a good feel for the energy without feeling overwhelmed.

Forget the main strip. Walk over to the Convention Center area or explore the residential blocks just off the MGM property. You'll find some great, local coffee shops and little bars that feel much more authentic and less 'tourist trap' than the main boulevard.

To maximize the time, I suggest structuring your day around a central activity. Day one: Pool/Relaxation. Evening: Dinner splurge followed by a specific, pre-booked show. Day two: Brunch, followed by exploring the non-casino side of the resort. Don't try to do everything. Vegas is exhausting, and pacing yourself is the best way to enjoy it. Also, consider taking a morning stroll through the MGM grounds itself; it's surprisingly beautiful and quiet before the crowds hit.

I agree about Carioqua, but for a slightly more casual splurge that still feels fancy, check out the Italian spot in the neighboring resort. It has incredible pasta and a great atmosphere without the massive price tag of the top-tier places. You'll feel like you're dining out in a different city.

Buy a drink ticket or two. It sounds simple, but it forces you to move and interact with people, which is half the fun of Vegas. Keep your feet moving!

For the pool without breaking the bank, look into day-use passes offered by smaller, adjacent resorts. Sometimes they have deals that let you access the amenities for a fraction of the cost of a full day pass at the main MGM pool. Also, check out the free happy hour specials at the ground-floor bars; they are great for people-watching and cost very little.

The Convention Center area is good, but if you want something truly hidden, try finding a local bookstore or a little park area near the MGM's back entrance. It feels like stepping back in time and it's a great way to reset before hitting the casino again.

Check out the lounge area at the main bar. They often have live jazz or acoustic sets that are perfect background entertainment without requiring a huge commitment or spending a fortune.

The key to a great Vegas weekend is balance. Don't plan every minute. Dedicate one afternoon to pure relaxation (pool/room), one evening to the big splurge (dinner/show), and the other day to wandering and discovery (the hidden gems). This mix prevents burnout and allows you to genuinely enjoy the atmosphere.

Totally agree about pacing. I found that if you try to cram too much in, you end up feeling rushed and just spending money without enjoying the experience. Leaving some open time is crucial for spontaneous fun.
