Hi everyone, I'm visiting Paris next month and I'm staying in the general RA area, but I'm completely overwhelmed by the transport options. I'm trying to figure out if the metro is really the best way to see everything, or if I should focus more on walking or perhaps using a river bus. Specifically, I'm wondering about the cost-effectiveness of a weekly pass versus buying single tickets for specific trips, like going to Montmartre or the Louvre. Any advice on local tips or must-know routes would be hugely appreciated before I get there. Thanks!

Definitely walk. Paris is best experienced on foot. Most major sights are within walking distance of each other, and it's free!

For a week, the Navigo Découverte pass is usually the most cost-effective option, especially if you plan on doing more than 3-4 trips a day. Just remember you need a photo and you have to activate it by Monday.

I recommend combining modes. Use the metro for long hauls (like getting from RA to the Louvre), but use the river bus (Bateaux Mouches or similar) for sightseeing days. It's relaxing and gives great views without the hassle of navigating underground stations.

Montmartre is steep! Don't rely solely on the metro there. Walking up the hill is part of the experience, but if you're tired, a funicular or a bus stop near the base is helpful. Check Google Maps for the best walking routes.

I found that buying a 'Carnet' (a set of 10 single tickets) was actually better value than the weekly pass if you were only going to specific, planned destinations. It depends entirely on your itinerary, though.

Reply to the Navigo advice: Is the Navigo Découverte always worth it? I heard it's complicated to activate if you arrive mid-week. Maybe just stick to a day-pass system instead?

The metro is efficient, yes, but don't underestimate the joy of getting lost in the Latin Quarter. It's a totally different vibe than just hopping on a train. Seriously, dedicate at least half a day just to wandering.

I agree with the walking advice, but also check out the Vélib' bikes! If you're comfortable cycling, it's a fun, unique way to cover ground between neighborhoods and avoids crowds entirely. Just make sure you know how to use the docking stations.

I think the river bus is fantastic for seeing the architecture from a different angle. It's a great break from the underground chaos. Pair it with a walk through the Marais district for a perfect day.

To follow up on the ticket cost: I calculated my trip and found that a combination of 3 day passes and 2 metro single tickets was cheaper than the weekly pass, provided I didn't need to travel every single day. Always calculate your expected daily trips!
