My partner and I are planning a trip to Vegas next month and we're staying at the Westgate. We've done some research on the main attractions, but we're really hoping to find some local recommendations for dining and activities that aren't just the big casino resorts. Specifically, are there any great, non-casino restaurants within a short Uber ride that offer good value? Also, if we want to spend a day exploring the area, what's a good walking route that covers some of the best sights without feeling overwhelming? Any tips on parking or getting around the Westgate area would be greatly appreciated!

For dining, skip the Strip entirely. Head to the Newton area. There are tons of local spots that are way better value than the big resorts. Check out some of the Mexican places near the main highway access.

Walking route suggestion: Start near the Westgate, head east towards the Strip, but stop at the Venetian's canals for photos, then cut back north towards the residential areas. It's a good mix of sights without feeling like a marathon.

Parking is a nightmare. Seriously, use ride share services for everything. It's less stressful and you don't have to worry about finding a spot.

The best non-casino dinner is definitely at a spot called 'The Golden Nugget' area, but not inside the casino. Look for places that specialize in authentic BBQ. Great value and super local feel.

Are you thinking of doing any hiking? Because if so, you are actually closer to some decent trails than you think. You can rent bikes and explore the Washoe Creek area.

I totally agree about avoiding the big resorts for dinner. My favorite was a little Italian place off Flamingo Road. It was cozy, amazing pasta, and felt genuinely local. Definitely worth the short Uber ride.

For a day trip, consider taking the tram out to the Hoover Dam area. It's a bit of a drive, but it's a massive change of pace and a beautiful day out. You can rent a car for the day.

If you want a walking route, just explore the Miracle Mile area. It's less touristy and has some great architecture to look at. Bring comfortable shoes!

What about a farmer's market? Depending on the day, there's usually one in the nearby community center. It's perfect for lunch and seeing local vendors. Check the city calendar!

I found a great little spot for cheap eats near the Westgate called 'Taco Heaven.' It's cash only, but the tacos are phenomenal and definitely not a casino experience.

Reply to the BBQ suggestion: Oh, that sounds perfect! Is there a specific name for the spot, or is it just generally in the Newton area? I'm looking for something easy to get to.

For activities, I highly recommend checking out the local art galleries. They are usually tucked away in side streets and offer a much more authentic Vegas vibe than the mega-resorts.

Don't underestimate the power of a good happy hour at a non-casino bar. Just ask the concierge at Westgate for a few recommendations in the immediate vicinity that aren't attached to a major hotel.

Seriously, the best value dining is always finding a spot that has outdoor seating. It lets you soak up the atmosphere without paying the premium resort prices. Try searching Yelp for 'local bistro' near your hotel.

If you are worried about getting lost, stick to the main thoroughfares and use Google Maps for navigation. It's surprisingly straightforward even when you're trying to find hidden gems.

I'd recommend checking out the local movie theaters that aren't attached to the casinos. It's a fun, low-key way to spend an evening and you get a real taste of the local culture.

Regarding the walking route, if you are going to the Strip, save your energy. Just walk from the Westgate to the Bellagio fountains and take a picture. That's enough to feel like you saw everything without burning out.

I'm going to try the Newton recommendations. Thanks so much! I appreciate the local insights. This is way more helpful than just looking at the Strip guides.

Just remember to wear comfortable shoes! Vegas is a huge place to walk, whether you are exploring local spots or just wandering the Strip. Hydration is key too!
