I'm planning a trip to Tampa next month and I'm really hoping to get some good poker action. I've heard about a few different venues, but I'm not sure which one offers the best mix of quality players and decent tournament structure. Specifically, I'm looking for somewhere that has a good reputation for its cash games, but if there are any major local tournaments running that week, that would be even better. Does anyone have experience with the major poker rooms in the area? Any advice on which one to check out or if there are any local groups I should try to connect with would be greatly appreciated.

You should check out the main casino downtown. They usually have the biggest tournament schedules.

I've played at several spots, and for pure cash game action, the smaller, less flashy rooms often have the best player pool. They tend to be more focused on the game itself rather than the spectacle. I'd recommend looking into the one near the riverwalk area. It's a bit tucked away, but the regulars are solid. They run decent multi-table cash games almost every night, and the atmosphere is very focused. It's not a mega-casino feel, which is exactly what you want if you're serious about playing. Also, check their website for a weekly schedule; sometimes they host smaller, local invitational tournaments that are much more manageable than the big ones.

The big resort is fine, but the blinds get crazy fast.

Are you planning to play high stakes or something more recreational? That makes a huge difference in which venue you should target. If you're looking for fun, low-stress cash games, there are a couple of dedicated lounges that are perfect. If you're serious about deep tournament play, the larger resort is probably your best bet, but be prepared for a crowd. I personally prefer the mid-stakes environment.

What about connecting with local groups? Check out Meetup.com. That's usually the best way to find the real action.

I heard the 'Riverview Poker Lounge' is great for cash. Is it reliable for tournaments too?

It is reliable, but their tournaments are mostly for local regulars, so if you are visiting, you might find the entry fees a little steep for the action you get. Stick to their mid-week cash games for a better experience. They have a great reputation for fair play.

Definitely check out the Tampa Bay Poker League. They host events regularly and have a solid community feel.

I agree with the Lounge user. The smaller spots feel more authentic. I found that the quality of the players is inversely proportional to the size of the venue. Less hype, more poker.

Just confirm the specific dates you'll be there. Some rooms run special, one-off tournaments that are much better than their standard weekly schedule. Don't just rely on the general 'big tournament' buzz.

I think the biggest casino has the most variety. You can start with a low-stakes cash game to warm up, and then move up to a tournament if you feel good. It's a good progression.

If you are looking for a good mix, try the main casino on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The action is usually strong, but the crowd isn't overwhelming, which is perfect for a visitor.

Don't forget to check out local forums dedicated to poker. Sometimes the best information isn't posted on the casino's own site. Good luck!
