I'm planning a trip to Egypt next fall and I'm really keen on seeing the major ancient sites, especially the temples. I've done some research on Karnak and Luxor, but I'm overwhelmed by how many options there are. Could someone with experience give me advice on the best way to structure a week-long trip? Should I focus on just the highlights, or is it worth spending extra time on smaller, less-known temples? Any tips on transportation or which temples are best viewed at sunrise or sunset would be hugely appreciated.

For a first-timer, stick to the big three: Karnak, Luxor, and Abu Simbel. Don't overschedule yourself. A week is perfect for a relaxed pace.

I highly recommend focusing on the West Bank sites in Luxor. The Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple, and Karnak are all relatively close and worth the full day.

Sunrise at Karnak is magical. The light hits the obelisks perfectly. Definitely plan to wake up early for that.

Transportation-wise, Nile cruises are beautiful, but if time is tight, flying between Luxor and Aswan saves half a day of travel time.

Are you considering Edfu and Kom Ombo? They are stunning and often skipped. They are easily done in a half-day trip from the main Nile route.

Totally worth the extra time on smaller temples. Sometimes the quiet, less-crowded spots like Dendera offer a more intimate experience than the massive complexes.

Agreed. The smaller temples provide context. They show how the religious life was spread out, not just concentrated in one massive spot. It rounds out the picture.

For a week, try this structure: Day 1-2: Cairo/Giza. Day 3-4: Luxor (Karnak, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings). Day 5-7: Aswan (Philae, Abu Simbel, Edfu).

Don't forget to book a private guide for the temples. They bring the history alive and help you navigate the sheer scale of the sites.

If you are doing a cruise, make sure your itinerary includes a stop at Kom Ombo. The unique dual dedication of that temple is fascinating.

I think focusing on the highlights is better for a first trip. Trying to cram too much in leads to exhaustion and superficial viewing. Pace yourselves!

I disagree slightly. While highlights are great, the journey *between* the temples is part of the experience. Take a slow boat ride through the Nile; it's relaxing and beautiful.

Tip on timing: Luxor Temple is gorgeous at sunset. The way the light filters through the columns is breathtaking. Karnak is great anytime, but sunrise is peaceful.

Abu Simbel is non-negotiable. Getting there early the next morning is key to beating the heat and the crowds.

What about the itinerary for the last few days? Should I allocate a full day just for boat travel between Aswan and Luxor?

Yes, allocate time for the travel. It's not just transit; it's part of the cultural immersion. Use that time for local markets and rest.

Make sure your hotel in Luxor is near the West Bank. It saves a ton of time crossing the river multiple times.

A must-see is Philae Temple on Agilkia Island. It's an incredible example of how the site was preserved after the rising Nile waters.

I found that hiring a dedicated driver/guide for the whole week was the best way to manage logistics. It eliminated stress and allowed us to move efficiently between sites.

Seriously, check out the smaller tombs in the Valley of the Kings. They often contain incredible, less-seen murals that are worth the detour.
