I'm really interested in catching some modern Greek films, especially the independent ones, but I'm having trouble finding reliable information on where they are showing live. I know there are various cultural centers, but I don't want to waste a whole afternoon traveling to a place that is closed or doesn't have a screening scheduled. Does anyone have recommendations for specific cinemas or online resources that track these kinds of live events? Any tips on checking the schedule for the coming weeks would be hugely appreciated.

Check out the Film Corner at the National Cinema Museum. They often host retrospectives of modern Greek directors.

I found that the best resource is actually the Athens Cultural Center's website. They aggregate listings from several smaller venues, making it much easier than calling each one individually. I highly recommend checking their 'Cinema' section first thing in the morning for the most updated schedules.

Short and sweet: Odeon. Always good.

I agree with the Cultural Center suggestion. Last time I went, they had a fantastic screening of a film by Yorgos Lanthimos, which was exactly the kind of independent cinema I was looking for. They also sometimes partner with university film departments, so keep an eye out for those announcements.

Do you think streaming services are replacing the physical cinema experience for these niche films?

The Film Corner is great, but sometimes they focus more on classics. For truly modern, independent stuff, try looking into smaller, dedicated art house cinemas like Kinemas. They are more unpredictable but worth the effort.

Replying to the user who mentioned Kinemas: I found that Kinemas can be hit or miss depending on the week. It's really helpful to cross-reference their schedule with the Athens Film Festival's secondary listings, even if it's outside the festival season. Sometimes they run special showings.

I also check out the listings for the Greek Film Archive. They are very knowledgeable about smaller, independent showings and sometimes host pop-up events.

My biggest tip is to follow local film critics on social media. They often post last-minute changes or announcements for smaller screenings that aren't listed on the main cultural websites. It's a bit of detective work, but it works!

Has anyone successfully used Meetup.com for this? I saw a group dedicated to 'Modern Greek Cinema Lovers' that organized a viewing last month.

I tried Meetup, but the group was inactive for months. I found more success with Facebook groups dedicated to Athens arts. They are much more immediate and the recommendations are fresher.

Just check the local university bulletin boards. Sometimes student film screenings happen there and they are amazing finds.

Good luck with your search! I hope you catch a fantastic film. Remember to always check the specific cinema's website for ticket purchasing, as some require advance booking even if the screening is listed online.
