I'm planning a trip to Merit Crystal Cove next month and I've heard mixed reviews about the crystal deposits. Specifically, I'm trying to figure out if the northern sector is actually worth the trek, or if I should focus my efforts near the main entrance. I'm looking for advice on what kind of gear I should bring, especially regarding protective equipment, and if there are any specific times of day when the crystal yield is supposedly highest. Any seasoned travelers who have been through the cove would really appreciate some insider knowledge!

The northern sector is absolutely worth the hike. The deposits there are much larger and higher quality than near the entrance. Bring a sturdy backpack.

I found that early morning is key. Before the midday sun hits, the crystals seem to 'charge' and are easier to spot. Also, always bring a headlamp, even if you think you won't need it.

Regarding gear, ditch the cheap gloves. You need heavy-duty, reinforced leather gloves and proper knee pads. The terrain is rough, and the crystal shards are razor sharp. Safety first!

Seriously, focus near the main entrance first. It's less strenuous, and you can get a decent haul without committing to the whole northern trek. Start small.

How about bringing a portable water filter? We were out for three days and running low on clean water was a major issue. Stay hydrated!

I disagree about the northern sector being always better. It's beautiful, yes, but the passage is tricky and requires good scrambling skills. Maybe stick to the lower valley areas for a safer, steady yield.

Definitely bring a small first-aid kit. Not just for cuts, but for minor sprains. The footing near the crystal veins can be incredibly unstable.

The best time? I'd say late afternoon, maybe 3 PM to 5 PM. The light hits the crystals at an angle that makes them sparkle, and the air is cooler, making the digging more manageable.

Are you planning on using specialized tools? I recommend a carbide-tipped pickaxe, not just a standard shovel. It makes a huge difference when breaking into the matrix rock.

I found that the crystal yield is highest right after a rainstorm. The moisture seems to open up the veins and make them more accessible. Check the weather forecast!

Totally agree about the gloves. My hands were shredded on the first day. I even brought a pair of specialized mineral dust masks, just in case the rock dust is irritating.

If you're going to the north, take a local guide. Seriously. The trails are unmarked, and you don't want to get lost in those canyons. It's worth the extra cost for the safety.

Short answer: Yes, the northern sector is worth it, but only if you have solid hiking boots and a good map. Don't underestimate the distance.

I spent a fortune on protective goggles. The dust and tiny flying shards are brutal. Don't skip eye protection, no matter what anyone says.

I used to think the main entrance was enough, but I was wrong. The deposits taper off quickly past the initial area. You really need to push deeper, even if it's exhausting.

I'd recommend bringing a portable charger for your headlamp and any communication devices. You do not want to be stranded without light or help.

For the best yield, try to mine near the confluence of three different colored veins. That's where the concentration seems to be highest. Good luck!

Don't forget about food and snacks. It's a long day out there, and keeping your energy up is just as important as your gear. Pack high-calorie, non-perishable items.

The local folklore says the crystals are best mined during a full moon. It's probably just superstition, but I'm willing to try it. Maybe you should check out the historical accounts before you go.
